Have you tried using some parallel compression on the kick and snare yet? I just don't hear it punching me in the gut yet.

I haven't had the time to play with your tracks yet, though I have imported them into Cubase.

Just threw the drums up, sent Toms to a group (eq/comp), OH's to a group (Phase 180), and ran kick, snare and toms to a drum group where I sent to heavy parallel compression. Transient Monster and compressor on Kick and snare individually. No verb.

This is what I got out of my typical starting point for drum mixing:

I think I hear what you are going for. On the plus side what you did really has a sense of space. But - what the heck is that sound between 1:33 and 1:34 that sounds like a voice saying 'wackawoo' ?!?! It happens several times throughout the song..... If you read this comment and think I'm talking out my ass, crank it and listen in exactly that spot....

Oh! I hear what you're talking about. That's the low tom.

Your drum mix sounds good, Jimmy. I'm looking forward to hearing how it sounds when you get everything else in there!

Actually it's funny to hear just the drums. I mean they sound like something from a cartoon. I mean that in the most honest way. No knock, they just made me laugh.

Anyway. Is the kick tuned higher than usual? I don’t hear as much batter click I’m used to hearing either. Snare has more ring than usual. The cymbals sound like the’re in 3D at 1:29. It’s good.

Ok, found some time and posted my mix of Tomb Raider in the Mix This forum HERE.

I like your mix Jimmy. It sounds like maybe you left some tracks out, or just did a clever job of blending it all together? Whatever, it sounds pretty good.

Steve, I'm sorry you're having trouble with my drum tracks. I just did them the way I do my own stuff. This is why I rarely do drums for people. Lol.

No worries, Greg. It's not your fault that I'm having trouble figuring out how to mix the things; it's my own inability with mixing.

That being said, I went back and listened to some of Greg's own stuff to see what he does with his own drums. I realized you mix the kick more "clicky" than I would have though.
So I went back to the mix, EQd the kick to be as clicky as I could make it, and remixed from there. I think it's starting to sound close to what I want!

Then I wrote this post. Then I realized that the side-chain compression on the OHS was making it pump like a madman.
Then I went back and fixed it.

Now, the 6th mix is up!

getting better all of the time.

Your all right. This song sticks with you - like the Scooby Doo theme.

Tried to listen, but links are to Illium, which I'll comment on in its thread.

Listened to Jimmy's mix and I really like the song. Love the synths and ooh-woos in the chorus!

Yes. Sorry. My site's back-end was getting cluttered, so I decided to consolidate all of the "work in progress" songs into one location. And in order to keep that uncluttered, I have to remove songs from it.

Long and short of it is, I'm keeping whatever song I'm currently working on accessible by that link. There was a week of non-activity on this thread, so I called it done and moved on to Illium.
