Toe in the water 4 Gimli's Song

As a huge LOTR fan I had to listen to the Gimli song.

Nice sounding acoustic guits (or was there an electric in there?) The cello adds a nice flavour. Were there lyrics to this? Or does it go with one of Tolkien's poems?

The song ended abruptly, mid-chord. I suppose it is a little longer than what is here. The overall track was maybe a bit to 'reverby' for my taste, but I am a bit of a reverb-nazi, so that should be taken into account.

Good job, and don't venture too far into the depths of Khazad-Dûm!!!

Incanus,
Thanks for listening. I just checked the file & it's complete - there must have been a streaming or download prob. The song finishes with 3 cellos reprising the intro.
Too reverby? Probably right - I ran the final mix through an exciter/enhancer so that would account for some of the effect.
I'll go back to it today & remix wihout the enhancer & see what comes out. If it's an iprovement I'll pop it up with the lyrics - It's basically about Gimli falling for Galadriel & then having to leave the forest for who knows what.
Thanks for the feedback.
Cheers

Hobbits are habit forming

Gimli - Nice stereo spread on the fingerpicked guitar, and nice blend on the lead guitar. Bass is good, clear, full. Strumming guitar washes the soundscape filling it nicely. only one nit pick (just my .02) - The cello(s) seems a little loud in spots toward the beginning, just maybe ride the faders a touch in those spots. Guess you could try compressing it but I would do faders first. Cellos are fine in the end. Other than that the mix is great.
I like the song arrangement and it's well played too. Not a LOTR fan but I've seen the (last) movie and this music is definitely well suited. I don't have a problem with the reverb because I like using a bit of reverb myself. Nice One!

Whisper - cool intro - nice effect. Could bring vocals up a touch in the beginning, they sound pretty good and I'd like to hear more. Again nice guitar playing and mixing. The cello on this is much nicer in the mix - just right. They are really dynamic! Short and very Sweet - really liked this one too!

Taking Incanus' thoughts to the mixer.

Incanus,
I've removed the light gloss of rev that I put over the mix. There's only a little rev on 2 indiv tracks other than the main vocal that was verbed on the way in.
I tidied up some of the clicks as well & lowered the guitar solo a tad & updated the upload so a better version should be up there now.
Let me know if this better approaches the mark.
Ido1957,
'57 - a good year!! Thanks for the ideas. I'll play with the mix. The 1st cello was too loud generally you should hear it pre mp3 compression. I still haven't worked out my Alesis micro limiting/compression thing while recording so that it doesn't add too much noise to the cello. So I'll tweak that auto faders - at least the cellos don't boom on this one. It took me ages to get this far but I do want to get the recording of them right.
Thanks for the comments fellows. If you come back in a day or so I'll have attempted to apply Ido's suggestions. Let me know if I come close.
The lyrics to both are now on the click site with the band info etc. Gimli's are pretty twee on reading.
Cheers
& thanks

Incanus & Ido1957,
I've applied your recommendations - reduced 'verb, cello solo levels pulled a little. I've also cut the level the nylon acoustic solo a fair bit.
Let me know if this works any better.
Anyone else that'd care to comment - PLEASE DO.
Cheers

Hey rayc - just had a listen to the latest track. The cello parts in the beginning sit better in the mix, especially the lower notes. Good mixing and again, good tune....
