Hello all,

I have 2 MOTU 828 Firewire interfaces runiing into a computer sytem and I record into Cubase SX. I am contemplating the purchase of an analog reel to reel 16 track beacause I want a more vintage warm, fat sound. I'd like to record tracks onto the tape first, then dump the audio into the digital system for editing and mixdown.

Does anyone know if this is the best way to go, or can I get it done just them same by just going through tube preamps instead?

While there are plenty of "analog simulator" effects out there for computer recording, the only way to really get that "tape" sound is to record on tape. Tubes can give you "warmth" (=harmonic distortion), but it's not the same as the natural compression you get with tape. Neither way (analog vs. digital) is good or bad; they are just different. Digital is "cleaner" and "more accurate," but also reveals a lot more flaws, in my opinion.

If you really want to go with tape, head down to the "Analog Only" forum at the bottom of the BBS. They can help you get set up. My understanding is that getting a good analog setup is relatively expensive, and the tape itself is becoming somewhat scarce (at least for the time being).

I believe that you can sinc up some reel to reels with cubase. I may be on crack though. ;)
