The overheads are making the snare sound like crap...I point the 990's away from the snare as much as possible but no luck.

Perhaps you're going about this the wrong way. Deliberately trying to get the snare out of the overheads by aiming them away from the snare will just lead to more off-axis snare sound, which is almost always going to be less sonically pleasing than an on-axis sound. Why not focus on getting a "good" snare sound in the overheads first?

Other things to try:
1. move the overhead mics closer to the cymbals

or

2. place the "overheads" out in front of the kit, about level with the cymbals

and

3. tell the player to hit the snare a little softer

Too much snare in the overheads? Can there ever be too much snare in the overheads? Myself I'd be thinking: where's the problem?

No doubt!? A bit of decent compression in this situation and yer golden. Enjoy this experience, Mr. Goodland; it may be the only time in your life you have too much snare in your overheads. :D

If the snare in the overheads sounded good I wouldn't mind. But, the snare in the overheads make the snare sound roomy and unprofessional. I think I should just have the drummer tune down the snare like I said earlier.

Yeah, if the snare sounds bad in the room mics, then either the snare is tuned poorly or there are phase issues with the overheads. Either way, the larger issue to look at is that it sounds bad in the overheads, cause its gonna be hard to get a good snare sound out of your mix.

I'm pretty sure now that what I need to do is position my overheads differently and have the drummer tune down the snare. Thanks everyone for your help. More suggestions are always welcome.
