Do yall track out every instrument or do yall track out instruments in groups? For example, high frequency sounds, mid frequency sounds, low frequency sounds?

It all depends. Normally, we layer, so we group all the layers. Claps, kicks, Instruments that are layered. Otherwise you'd be looking at 60 tracks!

Sometimes, we'll group the perc. Congas, and bongos to a strero track...

Audition is real easy to use..I use to use it when I had my software set-up for recording and mixing..you just have to play with it to learn it..if you ever used Cool Edit Pro..its the same damn thing..Adobe bought out the company that made Cool edit pro

So your layers sound good, where MANY of the artists I've mixed for, have given me some of the worst layered drums I've ever heard in my life... Muddy 808's and drowned out kicks, so pathetic. LEARN HOW TO SCOOP A FREQUENCY!!!!

But for anyone who isn't Beats Buy, or hasn't got the ear to produce a professional mix... DO NOT send instruments layered together. It's not professional practice in the industry. I've mixed beats with over 50 individual tracks... I mixed a beat 3 weeks ago that had 17 layers of kicks alone....

Let the Pros handle the mixing, that's what we're here for.

I'm very interested in learning the particulars of this (not so much layering as much as getting the layers to sit right). I think we have a couple threads about the actual layering already...

Maybe we/I could start a separate thread with an example track (maybe in Reason or PT) and let people try their hand at it (namely, me ).. Then the initiated ones could post opinions? I'm not trying to be a menace... But, I've been doing making tracks for years and I'm down to suffer any struggle of picking up a skill to get my game tight.... Thoughts?

Regardless of the fact that I run a business as a Tracking/Mixing/Mastering engineer, the professional way to work is what was previously stated.

I've had SO many producers send me beats they said were "professionaly mixed" which sounded like complete crap, because they don't have a clue about mixing.

You can stick to your guns on it, but to assume that you're the only indie person who can make a professional product is assanine, and will severely limit the amount of people willing to work with you.

I respect your opinion about the subject here, but I also would like to add that professional productions goes way above single tracking the instruments and shipping them off. If you're pro and I'm pro we both know there's only one way to go about this...original file and artist at your side. I ain't said nothing about me being the prodigy in mixing, I just said that I don't trust anyone else with my shit. And I also expect that kind of understanding from my clients, if they're pro that is. Otherwise I just make beats and sell them, to people that pass my bar.

Singletracks won't render the same result as if you were to have the original file at hand, original file = better result. I'm sure you understand what I mean here. This all depends on what kind of equipment you're using when producing, but I still stand by my point here. Mpc, tritons, sx, reason, pt...bring the shit along to the studio and ride the knobs there.

I don't see why you wouldn't track your instrumentals. In the end if you're dealing with serious cats, that's only going to enhance your mix. If they're doing what they're supposed to be doing, you're getting paid and you're getting due credit for your work. Imagine how shitty some shit on mainstream would sound if it wasn't taken to a professional mix/master house.

True.. and that is the point...
when I send the indivdual tracks to a client I am giving them the opportunity to choose there own PROFESSIONAL PRODUCTION... Allow them the control of where and who mixes it... I prefer to be involved start to finish but hey..

Another thing is that when I track the sounds they all be from a high quality signal and recorded at an industry standard bit rate (just as if they tracked in there own studio or better)...

Original file ? I again prefer to work the way you described but, you have to record the performance at some point.... and if it tracked right and then mixed right it will sound right... with me I am giving you step one Tracked right..

In my opinion the beat has to get tracked in groups or individual if you want the most out of ya mix and history supports that...
