just wondering how one becomes other than a newbie on this site? I've been around a while and would like to know how one goes about gaining noteriety here. I'd like to post some of my recording work for evaluation by members. i expect objective and constructive criticism and even a rare compliment if someone finds it in order (please,no smartass attitudes or disrespect for senior citizen involvement, i'm 68).my songs are all covers which might present some copyright problems so i guess whatever i wind up posting will need to be non rippable,(is that a real word?). I am not financially able to join ascap or bmi or pay royalties so, if i'm out of line here just say so. I only use computer software programs sparingly, usually in mixing to soundforge. i track on an Alesis HD24 through a Mackie 24/8 board. kind of old school but it works for me. any helpful comments are welcome.

Have you offered to polish GregL's cymbals yet?

Took me doing that AND visiting True's Spankshed to wash off the newbie dirt...

;)

Seriously...

Just post your stuff and give honest feedback on others... Put on your thick-skin suit when the feedback is not what you were expecting and help out other members in forums where you feel your strengths are.

No ducking the smartass attitudes tho... That's one of the best things about these boards...

Oh... and maybe work on the double-posting... ;)

terry... you're no newbie... you're a junior member dude...:D not sure but i think 50 posts is the break point... congrats...

Sorry Terry... you double posted... still a newbie...

Post away in the appropriate forum and share your experiences. Newbiness is a state of mind...

Yup, 50 posts pulls you out of Newb status. Congrats.

Feel free to put up links to your tunes in the MP3 clinic. You get more feedback if you give some out. So listen to others' submissions and give honest comments. If you can give constructive criticism, great. If not, just a simple Thanks For Sharing works too. People will be more willing to listen to yours in return.

And like Bent Rabbit said, a thick skin helps a lot 'round here. it is the internet. <sigh>

And I'll take care of your double post for ya!!!

peace.

Trial and error dude!!!!! From your own work that is. The more you record and learn the more you will recognize the problems people are dealing with. Also by teaching you implant knowledge upon yourself longer.....or it "sticks" with you longer. You can read anything out of a book........which you should, don't get me wrong there is a wealth of information out there, and if it was just read it would cut the posts on this site in half. But if you experience things.....in this case recordings how to do this, how to do that, and what works best for you...............you can then bring Diversity to a website like this which will allow a broader scope of knowledge for all of us!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck man.

PS The smartest person on here is a newbie in some sense because there will always be someone out there with a little more know how.

And such as life.

Im in the military and this is kind of how we deal with our ranking system.

No matter what Rank you are, you will always be a leader AND a Follower its up to you to APPLY YOUR knowledge skills, abilities, and charisma as a leader, and to listen and soak in the knowledge of your leaders when you are in that followership role.

This site is exactly the same.................

CHEERS MAN!!!!!!

If you have a question... Ask it.

If you have an answer... Post it as a reply.

We are all learning from one another so share your knowledge and experiences.

If someone asks for opinions, give yours.

Don't worry about ranking or rep points, I've read some pretty good comments and replys from newbies as well as from the vetrans around here.

Hell, I always thought that you had to be here as long as Blue Bear has to stop being a newbie.

From one newbie to another... I don't think we newbs get to decide when we aren't newbs anymore.

Great!

I feel much better now! Thanks for the help in understanding internet mentality. I would like to put some of my work up for constructive criticism,(emphasis on constructive). By that I mean in regards to the quality of the recording. Not the type of music which will be rockabilly. I assume that, with my set up I'll need to transfer the stereo mix to Soundforge on my pc, then change the suffix from .wav to mp3. Is this correct? Once I've done that, how do I upload to get it on the MP3 clinic? Also these will be covers not original material and I've been told by a member that I don't need to be concerned with copyright infrigement here as I am not presenting it for sale. iF this is not so, please advise. My budget can't handle fines or lawsuits. Personally I am against "free music" as it goes against the preservation of personal artistic licensce rights.(I'm sure that last comment will bring out some anarchistic, destroy society as we know it"remarks which I will try to ignore. I do appreciate your help and patience in guiding me through this. In the old days I would have just sent a demo tape!

Nobody stays a newbie for long in here - so long as they stick around. I've learned loads from asking my questions of the experienced guys here and also by sitting quiet and reading the results of other newb's questions.

As for copyright, its not a crime to record yourself singing someone else's song.

Regards

Hey, Rockabilly would be great. Bring it on.

As for converting to mp3, no, you don't just change the file extension (suffix) to mp3. It has to be encoded as an mp3. I believe soundforge can do that. Import your wav file then Save As... as an mp3.

As for where to put your songs on the internet. You can get a free account at soundclick or reverbnation, places like that. Upload your mp3's and provide a link here when you post it in the MP3 Clinic.

As for covers, well, you're responsible for obtaining a license to perform someone else's song in public. Whether it's for profit or not doesn't matter. It's their song, they deserve to be compensated when someone else plays it. However, the license is between you and the songwriter or his agent, and I, nor the other mods, will not come looking to see if you secured a license. Posting a song on a place like Soundclick is making that cover available to the public and that is the difference from just whistling a tune or performing a song in your own home, etc.

If you want to explore licensing for covers, you can check out the Harry Fox agency. Most of your questions are answered there.

In the real world, no one is going to come after you with a lawsuit because you posted a cover on soundclick and 20 people listened to it.

just wondering how one becomes other than a newbie on this site? ............

Just hop on over to the mic forum and ask all kinds of questions about Neuman mics. Tell 'em you have about a dozen or so. Tell 'em you are sick of tripping over them and what is the best mic locker for under $100? That should do it.

Yeah we all know that Neumanns sound like crap, so why bother?:D

Sorry but I just don't get it.

Try as I may, even with Windows for dummies, I guess I am stupid! Anyway I've come up with another way for any of you who are interested to listen to my music. here is the site, url, or whatever you call it. I had forgotten all about my own website on Myspace. My daughter put it up quite a while ago and at the time i put 6 songs on it. The site was going to be a plug for my studio but due to unexpected problems,(a stroke and a quad bypass) i abandoned the idea. I'm glad it's still up so if you want to listen:
http://www.myspace.com/thirdgenerationband

I don't think you can just click on that, you'll have to type it in. anyway, if your interested, give a listen and constructive comments only please. Please remember these are old and even dummies get better as time goes on. Thanks

And I'll take care of your double post for ya!!!
