I have te sansamp bass DI -

I am looking for a nice punchy sound, something tight sounding.

any suggestions would help!

I have an MXR M-80 Bass D.I., which is very similar tothe SansAmp. I find the thing that has helped me the most in getting a nice bass tone is really concentrating on the mids rather than the lows when I'm EQ'ing. It sort of goes against your instincts, but for me it helps.
I think a good bass tone is by far the hardest thing to nail on a recording. Good Luck!

Compression is the best tool to get "punchy and tight" and detailed and fat. It can also add too much noise so it's important to not use TOO much. Use one if you have one.

Also running the SansAmp into a preamp before it hits your recorder can give you a stronger, punchier signal.

Geez.... I sure overlooked the obvious, didn't I?

Compression on bass almost goes without saying.

Yeah! J-Station!!!

But as far as the sansamp goes I've got no clue.. like others said compression is your friend.

taken from the recordinginstitute.com website

"Try starting out with a ratio of 4:1, and a fast attack and medium release. I usually use the hard-knee type of compression here since bass is such an attack-oriented instrument. But if you were playing smooth jazz bass, then you may want to try soft-knee. It depends on the sound you are trying to get. "

I normally squash it harder than that, but wadda I know... Try it for yourself.

Rock on!
