That's like saying "How do I get somewhere?"

Ummm.... depends where you're trying to go..

What are you EQing? Why do you think it needs EQing? What device/software are you using? What type of music are you recording?

Someone might take a stab at helping you if you provide a bit more information.

Read:

This ........ and then this.

Edit: It's a good starting point, but take them (especially the first one) with a pinch of salt, and not as the EQ bible, because there's no such thing. Every instrument/recording/song is different. It's a good starting point though.

I try to capture the sound so that I don't have to use eq. I often end up using eq but the best recordings I've done usually have little or no eq on the tracks.

It's always better to "eq at the source", by that I mean tweak the mic placement, mess with the pillow in the bass drum etc... it's better to do that than it is to record something badly and "fix" it by eq'ing later.

When I use eq I seldom boost, I almost always subtract. Boosting, unless you have expensive eq, usually sounds pretty wretched to my ears so I subtract most of the time.

Do you have a stereo at home or in the car or computer whatever ?

If so, do any of them have treble and bass or an equalizer ?

If so, what happens when you adjust or mess about with the controls ?

Ergo > that is basically EQ. On your DAW, it's the same principle.
