Death metal is the one sub-genre of metal that depends almost exclusively on retards & posers for album sales. One of the cheesiest & stupidest trends to ever occur in the history of metal was cookie monster vocals.
I'm chosing you to bitch you because I just got here and you're the last person to exemplify yourself as a total asstard! Death metal while not for everybody, is nowhere near the talentless thrashing that some closed minded folks think it is. Declaring that an entire genre of music is full of "retards and posers" is a pretty ignorant statement. Please don't assume that we're all lower people then you are becasue the cool kid in the Cannibal Corpse shirt didn't invite you to his party.

I highly recomend everyone check out a few tracks by Beneath The Massacre. You might not enjoy it, and I'm not asking you to, but they are an excelent example of death metal played with an extremely high level of technical persision. Even if you still think it's bullshit (or you're too stuburn to listen past the "cookie monster vocals") they are still living proof that the stereotype of stoner metal kids who can barely play a bare chord is actually not so much the case in reality.

Dude don't sweat it. We all know that people who describe death metal as completely talentless are freakin r-tards, and have exposed themselves as such by making judgement of a style of music without actually listening properly. Either that or they don't actually know anything about music, musicianship or musicality.

Fair enough if they don't like the music, whatever, people are entitled to their opinion and everyones tastes are different. But to accuse a style of music like that of being talentless is fucking retarded.

Some dude was over at my house, whining about how the music I was listening to was 'done by talentless idiots with no musical ability whatsoever'. And just pretty much said it about all metal in general.

I got my guitar out, shredded for a couple of minutes, handed my guitar to him and said "now it's your turn hot shot. Show me what talent is. Go on, have a go, show me what you can do. Show me your chops. Give me a smoking lead". He didn't know what to do but I was adamant that he must shred for me. In fact I was so adamant that he tried. Reminded me of an 8 year old kid picking up an amped guitar for the first time ever.

The guy changed his tune after that. Says after watching me record for a day, and after being put on the spot like that, he respects the work that people do to make music.

Hahaha, that's an amazing idea! Hahahahahhahahaa I should do that to somebody...

That's aweosme!!!!! I've alway's wanted to pull that after getting decimated at Guitar Hero.

This gay thread doesn't deserve my pearls of wisdom, so I deleted my post.

Come to my gig and I'll make you look like the bitch. Shredding is 100% couch-picking masturbation. If you have time to practice your scales such that you can play every note you know in a minute flat, then you have no life and you will never get laid.

Guitar players get all hung up on this olympic mentality where they think good music=macho music. Macho music is rubbing your dick.

Show me your chops? You're as queer as a football bat.

I agree with you somewhat, but I think you're way off-base thinking that death metal and/or metal in general = "couch-picking masturbation". Sub-genres such as grind-core/metal are basically experiments in seeing how fast you can play/change tempos, and for most young metal fans it does hold a certain appeal to see someone just retardedly fast at a guitar. However, FAST does NOT equal GOOD, which is I think your point in slightly less vulgar/angry language. I get pissed off every time some kid thinks that some local band is "F*cking amazing!" just because they sit in there rooms and learn sweep-picking techniques all day. Sure, it's impressive that someone would take that much time out of their short lives to learn how to wiggle their fingers fast, but it's by no means related to being a "good band/player".

It's good songs that make good bands.

You're just like a gay man that's in the closet and scared of his own deires. You WISH you could shred. You know that most shredders are far beyond your skill and talent level. You feel threatened by their superiority and defend yourself by insulting them.

You're queer. :p

There are so many things wrong with this post I think I would get bored picking out each one so I'll stick to the shredding thing.

I never said I was any good at shredding. No, I don't have time practice my scales. I'm more of a rhythm guitarist TBH. Like whats the point in a solo if it ain't got a good tune around it. But I can still play better than someone who can't play at all. But go ahead. Pull all the assumptions you like about me and my entire life story from my post. Whatever helps you let off some steam, dude. Sounds like you need it. Guess your life sucks right now or something. Whatever man. I guess we all have our low moments. My condolences. I'm sorry I made you so angry

Funny about the getting laid thing though. My last girlfriend loved shredding. :D

I agree. This comment is just the kind of comment someone makes in their mind to help cope with the fact they are unable to do what others are. "I wouldn't want to be able to play that fast, that's stupid anyways."
You think there is a such thing as "just being able to play fast" ? What a stupid idea indeed. Having technique and speed has always been a desired attribute of musicians, and the ones that have that have been the ones who have made the memorable music that lasts the test of time...even when they make songs that are slow.

You can't just play fast without knowing what you are doing, you have to be able to play fast within the confines of scales and keys that are the structure of music to start with...

Yeah, the Beatles and Kurt Cobain were always known for their shredding ability. Not to mention 99% of the bands that your parents listened to and are still on the radio today...

oh wait.

Yes, many musicians want to be able to play fast and accurately. But those who make it a priority are the ones that play in shitty local metal bands that never go anywhere and the labels couldn't give a shit less about 'cause they're busy playing fast and not writing a god damned song! You can't RELATE to shredding 24/7. Keep in mind, I love a good solo, or a good sweet fast riff, but it's gotta be within the context of a song. 100% shredding doesn't MOVE people's souls, it makes their eyes bug out for a while, and it's fun to do, but it's not songwriting.

Well if it keeps the labels away, that makes it worth it alone! ...but alas that is a different story...

The thing is, I didn't get the impression the post legionserial made was about shredding 24/7, it's about people who know jack about music making these ignorant decisions that this genre or that genre sucks because of cookie monster vocals or it's just heavy music or whatever, when they themselves, couldn't even play a I IV V progression, never the less understand how to make a modulation.

Is everyone entitled to an opinion? Sure. Do certain people's opinion carry more weight than others? Most definately.

People who lack knowledge, should be careful to be too bold about their opinions, lest they don't mind being proven wrong.
I think that was a great example of how a situation could present itself in this light.

Do the little dots mean that you have decided to stop typing to go beat off... er... I mean, practice your scales?

To each his/her own :)

I agree, as long as you're referring to cephus' post and not mine :p

I don't think there is anything wrong with being able to draw on speed and to sprinkle it in as needed. That shit that is constant jackhammer garbage has one emotion, one theme, one din.

I have to admit that one of the biggest reasons I hate metal is because my boss loves it and I fucking hate his guts. We've been through this before. You can't empiracly measure guitar ability in notes/second. That whole bedroom guitar challenge thing is the exact opposite of what I think music is about. I can't imagine than legion serial and I have any more in common than our guitars do. His is some gay-assed, low-action, .008-strung butt plug and mine is a hilti hammer drill covered with pink fun-fur.

I've never been too good at metaphors. How about we leave it at I hate my boss' fucking guts and his music?

Wow, that's impressive! :D

Wow! Anonymous negative rep from metal heads? Who'd have thunk it?

:D

Really! You'd think with all that manly sounding music that they would at least sign their names!

Dude, I know the point you're trying to make here, but frankly it's tired and pretty stupid.
Sure, I'm not one who thinks that true musical ability lies in technical mastery, but I certainly won't dismiss technical mastery as if it's unimportant or lame. Especially not in metal. The important thing to consider is that in the context of metal it IS important, because people want to hear it. There is a huge metal fan base that appreciates technical guitar above nearly all else. Maybe that doesn't equate to supreme musicianship in your book, and I would agree, but it's all about context. Maybe the fan base is not as big and you won't be on the radio, but that's not the primary aim of such a musician.
There is quite simply a whole genre of music that is not about any other emotion besides aggression and extremity. And, it is hard to do whether you want to admit it or not. And alot of us love it for that very aspect. Dismissing it all the way you do just makes you sound like a pretentious, elitist jackass. But I'm guessing you're not offended by that title.

By the way, try to cover some gigs that I have played and I'm pretty sure that YOU would be the bitch. ;)
