So, I've been feeling the onset of GAS recently. Its been awhile since I bought anything for my studio. Over a year since I bought my last thing (UAD Trident plug) and almost two years since I bought my last piece of hardware (AT 4047 and a Naiant mic), it has never been this long of time.
So I've been thinking about what I need. I don't need another plug-in, I only have about 8-10 UAD plugs but that's about all I need (at least until I upgrade to UAD-2). I already have plenty of pretty decent microphones. So I was thinking a new preamp, but then I'd have to get expansion converters unless I want them going through my Firestudio. And 8 channel converters ain't cheap.
Then I was thinking maybe I need new monitors. I have the KRK RP-6's. When I bought them in 2007, they were the best I could afford. They sounded pretty good at the time. But after reading some reviews of the Rokkit series recently, they make good hi-fi speakers, not great monitoring speakers. They tend not to have much in the way of low-mids, and I'd have to agree, because my mixes tend to translate with a bit of muddiness.
The issue here, and really the main issue, is my room and treatment. My studio is in my parents' garage. They have a double deep garage, so its pretty big. The whole back half is my studio. Now all along the walls they have their stuff, so I have not been able to really treat anything, aside from a gobo that divides the front half from the back half (mainly to keep stuff from reverberating off the garage door). Now the room is spacious, my speakers aren't near walls at all. Considering I can't really treat anything (except possible on the ceiling, but it would have to be temporary stuff) is it worth upgrading speakers?
I can post some pics if people are curious, but it probably won't be for awhile.
And with that being said.....what are good speakers I can get? May try and shoot out some speakers at the local stores, a lot of people like the Adams A7x's it seems. I'd like to keep a pair under $1000 if I can, and I'm totally willing to go used.
