Howdy guys,

Wanted to post another mix. I know it still needs alot of work, but I'm sure you guys can point out some things that wouldn't have come to my mind. I know for sure that I need to use a de-esser on this song.. so heads up there.. otherwise.. I hope you can, for the most part, enjoy the tune. Thanks for any CC fellas.

I want back to my first thread and listened again... ug.. yea.. I remember what I did now.. I was .01 MB over what it takes to post on here.. so I deleted about 5 secs of the beginning of the song and forgot to sync in the vocals.. maybe thats why it sounded so bad.. I'd like to post it again if anyone cares to give it another listen.. please let me know

I think this is an excellent tune and a good performance. It hangs together much better than the first one you posted - I never got round to commenting on that one as I was never sure whether it was the version you wanted anyone to hear or whether it was the version where the drummer's mum had had a go at mixing or the one where your cat had sat on the keyboard during the mixdown etc etc etc. ;)

Re. the mix. You've got a nice psychedelic thing going on - the rotation on the guitar in the introduction is quite disorienting on headphones, but that's fine and the vocal effects are interesting. If they aren't stuck on the files themselves, I'd tone them down on the vocals a wee bit though so that they still sound distressed, but a tad less muddy. I'd also take a touch off the high end of the vocals too to anchor them in the tune with a little more body.
 
Yea I must've been halfway retarded when I did my first post... lol.. I'm gonna re-post it here soon. Glad to get a positive comment, thank you Rob. I panned the guitar left to right in the beginning (i wanted that "close your eyes and it'll make you sway" sorta feel). I'll go back and tone the vocals down a bit. I haven't got a chance to even start to learn the eq process, so when you're talking about taking the high end off, what would be a good plug in to use?? And when I do use the eq, do you guys think it'd be easier to use automation for the high end and just lower the line?? If that made any sense.. lol
 
You're welcome Volrath, I look forward to hearing more. Yeah just use any VST plugin and roll off some of the higher frequencies. I often just the ones on Ableton, but Kjaerhus have a free one that I've used too: VST EQ free plugins - Wavosaur

General wisdom is to try and use the EQ mainly to take away from frequencies you don't want rather than adding to those that you do - otherwise you end up with more plugin than vocal/instrument.

better mix and still has that live feel...at first the vocals made me cringe when they came in as they sounded so pitchy, but then they work..in a kinda "Grandaddy" or something kinda way, I like the lazy delivery...this sounds much clearer than your last track but ultimately it still sounds like a live mix, which I take is what you're looking for?

Yea the vocals at first were a bit 'loud'. I'm going to go back and add some volume automation and fix the level on it, then try some of what Rob suggested. I think I need to add some compression as well.. you guys think so? Oh, and I want to see what a deesser would do on it... some pretty heavy sibilance in there I think. It was recorded live, then I went back and dubbed vocals in. Most all our recordings are like that. Trying to present the band in its most raw form. I just thought it would be the best way to go if we wanted to push a demo cd..
 
lol.. but then again I do want a good solid mix so I can burn CDs for family and friends...... I'm not looking for a perfectly mastered, awesome cd.. I just want the stuff to be presentable to the general public
 
Live mixes arent bad, and this one certainly isnt...but theres only so much you can do with them by nature
 
I understand what you're saying.. I guess what we'll start doing is making a live mix and a more studio-ish mix of our songs... Oh I bet bandmates will get so aggravated knowing I want a 'great' take twice O.o lol..
 
Big pop at :40.

I liked the guitar parts. I didn't care for the automated panning, but that's just me. On headphones it can make you dizzy.

In listening to this and your other tune I'd suggest to maybe just put the reverb away for a while. Both mixes are swimming in it and it's a bit distracting. I'd like to hear what the tracks actually sound like dry, address anything at that point, and then maybe try to put them in a space.
