Hi, I have a Teac/Tascam 85-16 1" 16 track tape machine and I need to know if I can stripe it with some form of time code so I can sync it to my M Audio Delta 1010 & Cubase SX.
Cheers. . .

 Yes you can, but all it would do is let the 1010 and cubebase know what the tape position is......
It would not control the 85-16 unless you have a timecode generater/reader made by Tascam for the 85-16. If you did then it could link up with your other software and the two could work together......

Does your software have the ability to export timecode ? If so then run a RCA line or whatever from your software to an input {usually the last track } on your recorder, your in business....

 Also timecode is real nasty sounding, so keep the levels at 0 or -2 to reduce crosstalk noise from polluting adjacent tracks.......

Quite right !
I have used my dear 85-16 since I bought in '82 till '99 . I moved my studio from downtown and home, downstears. And got a MX2424 in 2000 and used it up until 2009 together with Pc based Sound Forge when I started with Sony Vegas, Sonar and Gigastudio.
But I was thinking on a TMS-1000 all these years and found one at Ebay in 2002. And lately I cast my eyes on the 85-16 that needs cleaning after standing stacked away for 13 years. But I've been reading more about syncing it to DAW. The best way seems to be to get the Motor-Tach/Tape_Move and all the timings from the old interface into a D15 and let the TMS-1000 follow the 85-16 without loosing an audio track for SMPTE !

I will try this later this week when I get to J-513 on the Function Selector PCB. It's inside so I have to dismantle a bit. This is exciting times when I finally get back to the multitrack that i made so many production on !
When hopefully finished, i will copy loads of productions on 16 track 1" tape to DAW in timelock.

Necro-post of the month! You've replied to a 9 year old thread! Congratulations!

Thanks for the fine applause ! I'm not a novice nor a only-digital-sound-engineer. Analog is still the best for many people, and I have to have both tech's in my studio to be happy. There's astoning little info on syncing the Tascam 85-16 on the net, so I will have try my best till' I get it right with the only help of the TMS-1000/IF-1000 manual. Other's view on this is highly welcomed !

I still have the old Fostex adat that used to chase 1/4" m80.
blah blah..who cares..
:)

By the way -Welcome to the fun house Muven :D
