I want to write out some parts for the sax player in the band. I can transpose, write the key signatures, write the notes on the staff etc. My problem is I can't even take some of the simplest lines in my tunes and put them down in time.
I have no problem playing in odd times and switching back and forth between times, but this all comes from an inate feel.
When it comes to writing something in time i'm lost. I might be able to write out Mary Had a Little Lamb if given a few hours.
So, obviously I need help.
Any suggestions, websites, unboring books, etc.?
I don't need to learn to site read, just write a little.
I could use a little help with spelling also. site read

Thanx for any help.

Make him learn it like a real fucking musician.

Listen to the music, have it in your head, and fucking figure it out by ear.

I'm sick of people who need this shit written down. It's music. Use the music-learning tools you were born with, I say. The ones on the side of your head

I suppose it's OK to write down the notes for him, but he should know the tune.

Knowing it cold, being able to play by ear are great, but it also helps to be able to sight read! You don't always have the luxery of having a musician who can play a certain instrument really well at your beck and call. Sometimes he/she may only be available for a short time, and it helps if they don't need a lot of rehearsal time to be able to nail a piece; if they can just read it off the page and play. Especially, like I said, if they are not a regular member of your band.
