Three options for Overhead mics... please advise!

Hey all, so I have a few options I think for overhead mics... I've been using Shure 57/58s but I know that those are far from ideal for overheads... anyway, here are my options:

- Buy another Studio Projects B-1 and use two of those
- Bite the bullet and buy a pair of Oktava MC-012s although I am desperately hurting for cash.
- Buy my friend's AT3035 off of him and use that with the B-1, since I've heard great things about this condenser.

What do you think? Thanks!
 
Well, the only advice I can give you based on what you're thinking is do not buy an AT3035 for one side and use a B1 on the other. I've never heard a B1 but I don't think you'd be real pleased with the results of 2 different mics over a drum kit.

I don't know how a B1 sounds overhead but the AT3035 isn't ideal. Others have had success with them but it's not a real "sparkly" mic and better suited to vocals and cabs. I personally think there are much better choices than what you've outlined, the Oktavas being decent as long as you find two that work and sound similar.

On an extreme budget and if your B1 sounds good, I'd get another one.

Knowing what I know now, I wish I'd have bought them long ago........Buy a pair of oktava's
 
From what I'm reading on thins forum those Oktava MC-012s and the MXL 603s are the most common recommendation for overheads. Being an Aussie though MXL and Oktava mics are few and far between. I've never seen them in a retail shop so I really can't comment on their sound apart from what I've heard in the mp3 clinic.
If you're really strapped for cash give the berry ecm8000 a go. I have a pair and I like them better than my V67g as overheads (stereo or mono). I find that they even sound good on a kick if placed effectivly

Get the Octavas. Long term, they're the best solution for your needs.
