Lol... Like audacity is something special.



Personally I wouldn't buy it. But that's just me being skeptical... I would (again, just personal preference) rather get a general use PC, load windows XP on it and use it as a DAW.

Sorry I provided opinion rather than fact... Maybe somebody else with knowledge on pre-configured DAW PC's drop by...

Unless you *know* Linux, I'd stay away from that. The specs are nothing special, the software list is pretty limiting and it only lists a small handful of interfaces that its "compatible" with (which is most likely a function of what interfaces have linux drivers).

For Audio, I'd stick with a WinXP system for now. Pretty much EVERY interface and software is compatible with XP.
 
Thanks jeff for your thoughts. My thought was, being that it was already set up it would be less to configure. But your right, to go with something more versitial. I will wait till I learn much more before jumping. (lots to know)

Linux and "preconfigured" are a bit at odds with each other. :)
I'm sure it is preconfigured to do exactly what it says, but once you decide you want to try to do something even slightly outside of that preconfigured machine, you'll probably need to quit your job and spend your entire day learning Linux. :eek::p The software they listed is nothing special- plus its open source, which means its free, just like the OS, so really you are paying all that for the hardware, and thats not a spectacular deal imo.

If you're already a Linux "nerd" (I've messed with it, but I'm far from competent), then you could probably set up something more powerful and flexible on your own for less $. There are a few people out there using Linux for Audio, but I would bet ya a beer that those people know Linux pretty well for other reasons (like they're probably programers or IT people).
 
I'm an opensource programmer with a whole datacenter full of linux servers, and I STILL wouldn't get that.. I hate M$ as much as anyone, but it does have its place. And besides the OS limitations, the hardware sucks:

1024 x 600 resolution - I have enough trouble fitting all my shit on dual 1680x1050s, which is almost 6x the screen space. How could you possibly fit your tracks, a mixer, your plugin windows, etc?

No firewire ports, so you're stuck with a USB one.. 2 channels gets old fast.

2gb ram, 320gb hd, 1.6GHz - cmon, a year ago I put together a desktop that buries these numbers several times over for about the same price..

Good luck upgrading anything hardware OR software.

If you need to be that portable, you could buy the cheapest refurbished dell laptop with xp home for less. And use any interface / daw. And use it for anything and everything else. And while we're talking about 'portable' - When you consider mics, monitors, interface, cables, etc., unplugging a desktop and taking it with you isn't THAT much more effort.

I saw that on musiciansfriend the other day. There's no way I would buy it. You could spend your money so much more wisely.

$550 will get you a very more than capable and upgradable Windows laptop. It could also get you an older model Macbook.

And like someone else said, you could build you a pretty speedy desktop for that price. That's what I did a couple of years ago. I built it in a small case with a microATX mobo and take it with me when I record. Works great for now, but I will be purchasing a laptop soon.

Again...I would stay away from that one.

Great to get your feed back. I see your point with portability. I don't even need for it to be portable, I just thought it was a cool little unit, all set up and what have you.
