I probably shouldn't critique this, as I am tanked, and waiting for pizza to cook....but I will.... :D

Good job on the vocals man...they have really nice character to them, and some good depth. This could use some really good drums....wish I could add that, but I'm not that good yet. :o The rest sounds really good, so the drums filling it out would be awesome. Nice keys, and bass sounds. And like I said, good job on vocals. Cool guitar...is that a lap steel, or did you play some slide on regular guitar?

Song is pretty decent man...just needs better drums to fill it out more.

thanks Dog for the critique.....it does need drums and I can't play them! The slide was done on my regal fitted with a tele pickup.

Wow, I had no idea you sang, very nice job. A lot different than the previous stuff I have heard of yours. You have the country sound nailed with the vox and arrangement (esp. organ). Piano patch is pretty good, is it your Korg?

Drums are ok, a little thin but fine. Perhaps a tad less reverb on the vocals. Other than that its ready to go. Might not need the synth strings, nothing in here sounds like a synth except them. Very nice.

Thanks for the comments David......yeah...that's my coal fired n364 :D Still a pretty good keyboard after all these years.

Cool Jay.....love your voice - it's perfectly suited to the style. The playing is great and the story is well written...Pianos and slide are cool...

:D :) :D :)

Really nice song and very well performed too! And like Ido said, nice story in the lyrics, the drums are not bad at all but could raise the level a bit in the mix. The drums are more of a classic country sound rather than the arena mix that modern country hits you in the face with nowadays.
I think it gives a good live sound that reminds me of a smoky honky tonk atmosphere-been there many times myself as well~ :) Vocals and harmonies sound fine, I think a bit less reverb on the dobro to let a bit more of the high end shine through during the solo-just my opinion though....

Ido, Anfontan....thanks for the comments.....think I'll go back and polish this up a bit more. :D

I listened to this a year ago while browsing your soundclick.
Liked it then Like it now;) The writing is very good! Not my favorite of yours but a close second:)

I'm listening on cheap headphones at moment so I can't comment tom much.
I can say that I noticed at the begining the right channel comes in a little quick a bit like it's switched on. I think it would sound better with a pretty quick fade in on the right to soften it up a hair.

If I wasn't on phones I doubt I'd have noticed.

Great singing on this. The song as a whole is great!

By way "Old Man Howard" is my favorite:D Listening right now. gonna have to burn it to cd.

F.S.

I never noticed the right channel coming in quick but, I don't use cans....maybe I should to hear those little things. Thanks for the listen Freud!!! :D

Your vocals are great here Jay, nice keyboard playing. Perhaps just bring the mids up and the volume on the drums a tad to help bring them into the tune.

Good work! :)
Thanks Gorty....I'll try that!

Really good work - the vocals are spot on.
The intro with the (seemingly) hard panned chords is a little uncomfortable in h/phones. It works once the other stuff is happening - perhaps centre the chords until the right hand comes in & then pull it away.
the synth strings are a little synthie. Treat them heavily or pull 'em back if not replace with a better patch.
Nice piece of pie.
