...so why be harsh as well as truthfull? Maybe you have issues that you are trying to work out by being the cop of the forum. That's fine too, that's one of the things available here on the BBS. Flame away....
Well put

It wasn't an argument, it was a question. he made a point that my stuff had a lot of "synthics" on the vocal and I was trying to get him to define "synthics".

Point is there were no effects on any of those vocals, just careful micing and many takes till it was right. He could have learned something if he'd let himself.

Anyhow, I have stopped posting in that thread.
Well put. Jazzmang just posted the waveforms for his song over there... DC offset out the ass...

Yup. DC offset (roughly defined) is the 'distance' between the song's relative baseline (0dB) and the ideal electrical baseline. This occurs because of relative DC levels between electronic components (in this case, the laptop line-in and whatever 'mixer' he was using.)
Glitches and other unexpected results can occur when sound effects are applied to files that contain DC offsets. Not to mention, there are more severe phase issues when DC offset is high.

I read all this for what?

I agree with post something worth-a-damn though. Alot of these people should know that the crap they put out is crap. I mean I don't care if your listening through the worst speaks in the world (when you record/mix). But some of the shit is just out of tune, messy (talent), and the timming is way off. Being a musician or claiming to be you should at least know these genral things before recording anyway.

Sorry Nic, I really just wanted to bump the original post. I guess from now on I will have to cut and paste into a new thread.
90% worthless

Yeah that would be great thx.

I've heard people say Nic alot. Its MaNic. I understand the livil is hard to make out.

if you want real entertainment, post your mp3 for reviews over at PSW, they rip the good stuff.

Nice thread...I think. I mean, it had nice moments, punctuated by something from Jake, lol.

There's nothing in the world wrong with politeness, but there's nothing wrong with frank honesty that goes beyond "that sucks." I suck, but I suck a lot less b/c of people like mixmkr, m.brane, WATYF, sluice, and a lot of others who went beyond just stating what the problems were and ventured into how to fix them.

Examples of Useful feedback:

1. "Your vocals sound like they're coming out of a PA instead of being in the same room with me" (this cured me of some compression evils, lol) - Thanks to mixmkr.

2. "There's a buildup in the 300-500Hz range in the guitars and vocals" - Thanks to Sluice.

3. "Your fake drums are backwards" - WATYF, lol.

Examples of Useless Feedback:

1. "You suck" - no sense repeating the obvious.

2. "The mix has no sparkle, no punch." - hey, thanks...I'm deaf so that really helps. I'll just turn up the "sparkle" and "punch" knobs and I'm good to go.

It's not brain rocket surgery science.

Nice thread.

Well, I would tend to disagree Chris. The fact is for myself if a person says something like this sucks because I can't groove to it, or it has no sparkle I can glean from that what I will. If enough people say it sucks it doesn't matter really what knob I want to tweak, the song sucks.

The most constructive criticism in my opinion is sometimes destructive.

It is up to the producer or engineer to interpret the terms. I can say that sounds too green and it is valid in my mind.Another ten people may come in and hear it and think, "he's right, it's way too green!". It's up to the engineer who is interpreting the information to decipher what that means to his mix/composition.

"Constructive" is a relative term, if someone says, "that is awesome, it had me shaking my booty" then it is considered constructive. Then when another soul comes in with "that's lame, I couldn't see the point" it's considered lame. I don't see why in music it's the job of the listener to give advice how to fix something that may from the listener's position have no solution.

That can be a very difficult task. Why should I put my heart into that kind of review when nine times out of ten the poster will come back with, "nah, I don't agree"?

I tell it like I hear it and I ALWAYS appreciate those who do the same for me.
Whether I agree or not, it takes balls to state the obvious sometimes.

This place is a tool. You will get all kinds of opinions from people here, many will tell you that your song is killer because they want you to do the same for them.

I have to post this as a disclamer to all you with soft feelings. Recently I have made a deep enemy by reviewing a song. to be fair the poster wasn't posting a finished mix and I was quite harsh on the song. I tried to reconcile with this pubescent momma's boy but he has sworn to hate me for being his best friend.

You aint on american Idol and I aint Simon.

I do to others what I want done to me. I want honesty and first impressions from listeners. Negative is good, if I hear all the negative comments from people now I can do something to change the ones I happen to agree with. Sometimes I will go through five songs and rip apart everyone but then add a couple of those to personal playlists. I give opinions only.

If you want someone to tell you how great you are then go play your song for your mommy or girlfriend. If you want brutal honesty then post your song...I am waiting. I try to tear away the superficial issues and look through the song to find what's holding it back. If anyone here has the nads to do the same for me I would appreciate it.

Thank you all and may we together bring better music to the internet,
Jake

GREAT post, jake!

Jesus...pretty lofty goals. I have no idea if this guy was capable of what he describes...no posts since '06 (when I got here).

This would've been back in the good old days where you had this tight-knit community of super talented, honest and thick-skinned people?

Nothing is stopping anyone from reviewing songs in any manner they see fit. Have at it.
