Thinking of buying a keyboard..

Hey. So im a drummer, and I want to learn more in depth about music and the specific notes, keys etc. so I am thinking of buying a keyboard, just to learn the basics and stuff. I dont want to spend a fortune on this, because drums are my main instrument, and this would just be for music theory and whatnot. I'd like to spend like.. $200. Preferably less, but i'll go to $200. This doesnt need to have the state of the art equitment, and all the new features and stuff. Just enough to get me started out. I'd like to not upgrade in like, a year, but if I get into i'll have to, but im not planning on it. So what I am looking for, is for you guys to request a keyboard you think fits my description. Thanks for any help..

There are plenty of older keyboards that are quite capable that can be bought cheap. What sound are you looking for?

I have absalutly no clue. I've never been a piano player, always been drums. Never worried about this sort of thing but I want to learn more about music itself, and to be a successful musician, you like, need to know piano, so I thought I should start. What sound should I be looking for? I am a total n00b.
 
That korg DW-8000 is a nice machine (i have the rack) any of the Yamaha DX synths (DX21)

I recommend that you look up whatever you find in your price range here

Ahh, whats the differance between a synth and keyboard? I didnt know differant keyboards had differant sounds.. I thought that was one of the points of a keyboard, to have a bunch of sounds built into 1 machine.
 
Well a synth is just that, a sythnesizer. It can be with or without a keyboard
 
One of my favorite "Bread N Butter" synths is the Korg N364. Easy to program, and you can get tons of sounds (And it has a disk drive so you can save them to a regular old 3 1/2" floppy). They can be had fairly cheap these days (Around $400). The Alesis QS series are pretty decent too.

Normally I wouldn't recommend the Yamaha PSR/DGX keyboards (Due to their amateurish quality, and lack of programibility/expansion options), but one of those might fit the bill for you. They are cheap money, and usually include some sort of Piano Teacher type function, for DIY lessons. But if you think you'll be serious about playing keys, than save up and get something at least in the $500 range (Like the above mentioned).
 
heh I checked out the band listed in your signature. You in that band? It's the kindof music I like. If so tell me about your music past. How long you been recording for and what instrument(s) do you play? What recording equipment do you use?

You talkin' to me??? Yeah that's my band.

On those particular tracks, I do the Keys, Lead Vox, Bass, and some guitars. Those are actually just rough demos, as they lack most of the Guitar solos. "Fallen Moon" is the title track (track 6) of the first disc of a 2 set series we will be releasing soon (The second disc is "Red Ocean").

Those tracks were done in my main studio, based around Cubase SX and a Tascam DM-3200, and a ton of outboard gear and plugins. The guitars for these tracks are Ibanez and BC Rich, and a custom built 5 string bass, through a Mesa Dual Rectifier, a Vox Tonelab SE, Marshall JCM800 (50w), Digitech GSP-7, Genesis 3, and BP-8 pre's, and an Ashdown bass amp. The keys used on those tracks are: Korg N264, Korg N364, Korg Karma, Alesis Ion. Those are some of the "Less keyboard intensive" tracks.

About me: Playing drums for 24 years, Piano for 23, Guitar and Bass for around 15 years. I listen to everything from Loreena McKinnett to Dimmu Borgir. I'm a huge prog rock fan, and some of my favs are ELO, ELP, Uriah Heep, etc.
I really like Nightwish, Sonata Arctica, Rhapsody, Mozart, Holst, Iron Maiden, King Diamond, and even some completely gay stuff (I'm a closet 80's fan :eek: ). More or less I'll listen to most anything, and I almost never try to cover songs. I'd much rather spend my energy creating original stuff (Short of maybe dissecting an interesting part here or there). That's more or less it.
