Hey --

On the roland and fostex machines, can you transfer files to PC for burning to CD?

Because, since I have a burner (Yamaha firewire), I may not necessarily want to buy a burner for the standalone -- but I would if I had to ...

I see the roland supports "roland" burners, and the fostex looks like it will support SCSI burners ....

Thanks!!

Oh yeah,

You could use a standalone plus a mixer of your choice right???

The Roland supports Roland drives, and some other brands (like plextor), because that's what IN the roland drives...

For transferring to pc you need a soundcard with digital input...

The standalone units also have a digital mixer build in. You can buy standalone recorders without a mixer, but then you'd need a seperate decent mixer, and something to record your final mix with, and it would finally cost about the double, I guess... Also, the big pro of those standalone things is that you can stay in the digital domain once you're in it.

Here's my .02 cents....damn there's a lot of pennies in this thread :)

I think the best advantages of the pc system are that you can easily upgrade it, and the whole editing idea.

Some systems crash, but if you buy decent components you shouldn't have a problem. I put together my daw (Pro Tools digi001) about 3 months ago and I haven't had a single problem with it. Did I spend a lot of money? Roughly $1000 on the computer, and $700 on the Digi 001. With an adat at $1300? for eight tracks....

Digi 001 has 2 nice mic pres in it+ 6 more channels of input power. If you need more it has lightpipe. (that means for 259, a d/a converter gives you 16 inputs) It comes with a lot of great plugins, and a very solid extremely powerful and easy to use sw package. All I can say is I'm an extremely happy camper.

Heavy T- I came very close to picking up the delta 10/10 and ntrack because it was a bit cheaper. I used ntrack for a while with my sblive, but in the end it wasn't the best choice. I found it quite unstable. I'm a computer technician so it's not like I don't have a clue. I believe the delta comes with vegas which I have too, but I found it very hard to work with when it came to plugins. Cool edit pro is great to edit and track with but doesn't have real time effects. If you're open to other solutions, go to digidesign.com and have them mail you their free video. It shows how easy everything is.

Finally,
Hackers are cool. I like free software.
