that's bullshit... throw some notes up in the air and see where they land. I don't need a drink for that.

flat9 made some reasonable comments and you give him some speach like 'wake up and you'll understand chaos'....:D

of course this "music" has a style. randomness in itself is a style then too. But like said earlier...the mechanicalness of this shows [to me]that anyone with access to a sequencer for the first time can come up with results just as gratifying. Now...maybe if this was constructed of loops and samples that were altered to protect the innocent.

:D :D

Uh oh! I smell the drstawl challenge there brother!!!!

What the Fuck can YOU come up with that has the SOUL of a drstawl piece, let alone the underlying structure?

Give it up Mr Myxmaxaxtxtxtxt!!!!

Get back to me with details and I'll get it started!!!

Thanks!

I downloaded that and I have to say you clipped it pretty badly!

Had some valid phrases....

but HOW do you know that is clipping? think about it.

Because it makes a farting sound upon my speakers that is not pleasant.

Intended? Maybe. Welcome? Fuck No!

Pete and Julie: He can't hear the fucking clipping going on....
Call 911!!!

Dropouts? Where? Or I should ask, "When?"

Well, maybe I didn't mean 'dropout' but 'fluttering'...you mean you have no idea what I'm talking about? :)

(btw, downloaded the other tune....liked it too, even better....and no fluttering in there :D )

I liked the clipping in Mixmkr's piece....hilarious. :D

Hey Dr.
.....cool stuff. Im kinda thinking that this is more of an experiment than a serious writing attempt. (I havent read the above posts) I like the choice of notes.... but the bang on the piano rhythm keeps it from being too musical. Its a cool experiment though. It might be a great sounding intro.... for something..... great sounding:D :)

I always enjoy listening to your little novelty tunes, but you should really stop acting like your Beethoven or something.. The tune is cool if you don't take it too serious, but you tend to act like your some sort of musical genius.. :)

dobro says: It's never bullshit to invite someone to give new music enough listens to familiarize yourself with it and see what it's got to say for itself. You know I'm right.

Secondly, doc doesn't 'throw notes up in the air and see where they land'. He plans stuff exquisitely. There is no chaos in his music - it's entirely controlled and worked out. Maybe you can't see that. And if that's the case, you'll never know I'm right. :D

Brian Eno did an interesting experiment once:

First he recorded three minutes of street noise. Then he decided to 'learn the piece'...in other words: listen to it for a week or more. After that week every car, every bicycle, every barking dog made sense to him. He recognized the individual noises, he knew when they started, when they ended, the pitch, the rhythm. It became 'music' for him...

The experiment opened up his ears. After that, it seemed easier to handle abstract music, or abstract art in general.

I like to listen to music like this (and even more extreme stuff than this) just to open up my ears. It's fun trying to discover something nice and beautiful in it, or something extreme and ugly (which can be lovely to listen to, sometimes). When I listen to other music afterwards it seems to be different. Even my own music seems to be different. I love that. I understand exactly what Dobro is trying to say...

I agree with Dobro: drstawl's music is organized, it's rather easy to notice. But I also agree with B. Sabbath: he's not the second Beethoven.

What's wrong with throwing notes in the air and see where they land? I hardly do anything else! :)

I don't think this kind of thing, and this song in particular are nearly as random as people make them out to be. I'm a big fan of music with the 'wrong' notes, from Alban Berg's 'Wozzek' to Beefhearts 'Trout Mask Replica'. This music can really pack an emotional punch and always generates a visceral reaction (good or bad) which is precisely the point.

...like i mentioned, I like the experiment.... and the choice of notes, BUT...... when doing things in a very abstract way, IMVHO care has to be taken to avoid just pouring paint out of the bucket onto canvas and calling it art.
.......could be a great intro though:)

care has to be taken to avoid just pouring paint out of the bucket onto canvas and calling it art.

Let's not call it art then...

If people would stop calling everything 'art', the world would be a better place.

This is, like everything on homerecording.com and popmusic in general, folkmusic to me...

Folkmusic? Yep, folkmusic: 1. it's music of the people 2. you can do it without having to study for it first, and 3. you're allowed to steal everything from everywhere and make it something of your own.

That's what Lennon said all rock n roll was - folk music. I totally agree. But keep in mind, not everyone can bang on the piano in quite the same way, just look at Thelonius Monk.

It doesn't always have to be good folkmusic...that's right.

I didn't know John Lennon said that...most people react quite furious when I say it. Now I can say I quoted Lennon... :D

If it seems like I'm too serious about my "works" it's only because I'm bummed seeing them abused by irrelevant analyses. Like hearing a criticism of an SM-57 where the reviewer was upset that it didn't perform well as a paint stir stick.

It is more than throwing buckets of paint at a Sound Canvas. If that statement makes me sound too serious, oh well!

No- I'm no Ludwig. But I did know one! What a wigger!

But- I am drstawl and I'll leave it at that. :)

You act like you're surprised...

C'mon, be honest about it: you make thought-provoking music! Don't go whining when people don't seem to get it and try to describe why they don't 'understand' it! Accept it, or start making other music....

What kind of critique are you looking for? Mixing tips? Mic placement tips? Hey, I'm just guessing here...only wanna help! :)

Third time listening to U043d, I like the part in the middle....

I have no idea how to comment on it mixwise.
