I posted a week ago mentioning a music seminar that was being held here in baltimore. i went to the seminar but i was only there for the last two hours. i was told that i only missed one of the three panels so here are the notes that i was able to take down from those two panels.
2nd panel consisted of national label execs and local label owners, promoters, managers, local rapper, famous producer

how do i get my songs played in the clubs?
Answer
never approach a dj in the middle of his set. try and catch him while he's not in the middle of mixing and hand him your cd

how do i get on the mad lynx road show?
Answer
1. need a video on rotation on BET
2. need a lot of spins in the radio stations and clubs
(D4L sucks but they were getting 400 spins a week)
3. or dominate BET's uncut

what advice do you all have for starving independent
artists?
Answer
1. believe in whatever you do!
2. perserverance (country grammer and still tipping was
3 years old before the album broke)
3. market yourself MAKE people Believe in you
(again look at D4L
4. try to go a little left of what's hot and try to be better
than what's out there
5. start in the STREETS to get RADIO play! what the
streets want the radio will play

how do i get my material to record labels?
Answer
1. don't send in demos! get an entertainement lawyer
or a manager to shop your product around for you.
2. a label signs your entire team not just you. they want
your lawyer and manager

2. have graphics and a name with your disc
3. approach these dj's professionally

1. look at what's on the shelf. compete with the

3. make sure MIX and MASTERING is on point
4. get a manager but don't get one with too many
artists. make sure he or she has a good track record

1. library of congress
2. protools dates the music
3. poor man's not very good but better than nothing

no telling how much info i missed out on during the other six or so hours that i wasn't there but, i hope what i did get helps some of you. most of this stuff we already know but it sounds good to hear it straight from the mouth of Kevin Lyles, Mad Lynx, Skola from Dru Hill.......I was jotting all of this stuff down, i wish i would have had a micro recorder or even a camcorder because i saw a cat in there with a camcorder. damn! now that i think about it, i could have copped a copy from him.
