I posted a week ago mentioning a music seminar that was being held here in baltimore. i went to the seminar but i was only there for the last two hours. i was told that i only missed one of the three panels so here are the notes that i was able to take down from those two panels.

2nd panel consisted of national label execs and local label owners, promoters, managers, local rapper, famous producer

Question
how do i get my songs played in the clubs?

Answer
never approach a dj in the middle of his set. try and catch him while he's not in the middle of mixing and hand him your cd

Question
how do i get on the mad lynx road show?

Answer
1. need a video on rotation on BET
2. need a lot of spins in the radio stations and clubs
(D4L sucks but they were getting 400 spins a week)
3. or dominate BET's uncut

Question
what advice do you all have for starving independent
artists?

Answer
1. believe in whatever you do!
2. perserverance (country grammer and still tipping was
3 years old before the album broke)
3. market yourself MAKE people Believe in you
(again look at D4L
4. try to go a little left of what's hot and try to be better
than what's out there
5. start in the STREETS to get RADIO play! what the
streets want the radio will play

Question
how do i get my material to record labels?

Answer
1. don't send in demos! get an entertainement lawyer
or a manager to shop your product around for you.
2. a label signs your entire team not just you. they want
your lawyer and manager

Question
how do i get my music played on the radio?

Answer
1. find out what time and days they are accepting
material.
2. have graphics and a name with your disc
3. approach these dj's professionally

Question
what's the right way to package my material?

Answer
1. look at what's on the shelf. compete with the
graphics and packaging
2. get a barcode and get company registered with
soundscan
3. make sure MIX and MASTERING is on point
4. get a manager but don't get one with too many
artists. make sure he or she has a good track record

Question
how do i copywrite my songs?

Answer
1. library of congress
2. protools dates the music
3. poor man's not very good but better than nothing

3rd panel consisting of local radio and XM radio DJ's

Question
what makes a radio or club banger?

Answer
1. just make sure the song is HOT point blank
2. don't bring a whole cd just bring that one hit song
to the radio station.

Question
any advice for up and coming artists?

Answer
1. GRIND! GRIND! GRIND!
2. takes money to make money for example:
security will not let you in to these label offices
to talk to jermaine dupri BUT he likes going to
strip clubs. catch him in VIP. you'll get close to
him without security PLUS he'll be impressed that
you were able to get in there.
3. hit up the mix cd's and BLAZE em

no telling how much info i missed out on during the other six or so hours that i wasn't there but, i hope what i did get helps some of you. most of this stuff we already know but it sounds good to hear it straight from the mouth of Kevin Lyles, Mad Lynx, Skola from Dru Hill.......I was jotting all of this stuff down, i wish i would have had a micro recorder or even a camcorder because i saw a cat in there with a camcorder. damn! now that i think about it, i could have copped a copy from him.

i know we talked about the quality of the sound not being where you wanted it but if I was you I would try to rework that whole thing to get the quality up to snuff cuz the beats and lyrics are on point. mystikal released his first cd twice and you remember how big it hit. I got faith in yo ability dawg its just a matter of time.

NOW YOU FEEL ME

Yeah alot of this is good stuff Thier jug thanks for the info. Alot of us know this already but I can tell you I have experienced the other side that's why know what they say works because I have done the opposite and failed. I have done what they said and exceeded.

This is what I have been saying all along for the Hustle magic joint. Singles will get you radio play not a whole CD.

yeah. to be honest i felt you the first time. it's just so much work to redo that. mostly all of those songs were lost due to external harddrive failure. i had someone working on that but i lost contact with him.

thanks peritus! there are interviews being held for 5000 interns for this upcoming hip hop reality show in baltimore. They are looking for anyone who wants to become a Manager, Promoter, A&R or anything else behind the scenes in the music business. Later they will be looking for talent, the show is supposed to be fresh and new. I opted to not remember the number and just remember the web address but the site doesn't seem to be up, the guy on the radio only said "ww.the next tv" I assumed he meant either WWW.THENEXT.TV or WWW.THENEXTTV.COM. It's kicking off this weekend but i'll be in Georgia. If anyone is interested they can probably call the radio station in Baltimore "92Q"

Both of them sites work... I think the first one is the correct site. None of the links on the site work, though... I'ma keep checking that, so I can audition in Detroit.... I have no doubt I can make it to the finals in my area.

yeah, the first link is the one, when I checked the day I posted it wasn't up yet. I think that's a really good opportunity.

I upgraded my package and I didn't know that I was going to have to upload the entire site again. I'm back in Virginia and I won't be driving back home to
Baltimore this weekend. When I drive home the weekend after next I'll have the site up and running again. Check your PM.
