There's Something On My Fender

I went to a local music store, saw a beat up looking Fender Stratocaster with knicks & gouges in it.
I asked the salesman how much he wanted for this piece of crap. He told me it was a new Strat, gouged up at the factory by machine to look "used"..
What is going on here? Is Fender being run by a group of crack addicts with a sadistic side to them?
These guitars really look ridiculous, and they want over a grand for them, too.

Maybe I am in the wrong business.
Maybe I should urinate on my Rickenbacker, spill beer on the neck, and put cigarette butts in the sound holes, then sell it to Guitar Center for $3000.00

I think those are the 50s and 60s 'reissue' vintage Strats or some shit...I read about them in Musician's Friend...Classic series I think? Maybe I'm wrong.
 
look at the bright side of owning one - would you really give a $^!# about damage?

I've been repairing and building guitars for 25 years, and those new relics make me think i've wasted my whole life trying to do good work. Those guitars remind me of the pre torn levis at twice the price !

heheh.. Next time I see a vintage car I'm gonna kick the piss outta the quarter panels and fenders and tell the owner I'm doing him a favour......:D
 
They do sound and play really good/well.

Hey, I have some great sounding JBL's with that vintage look. I would be willing to part with them for $2000!

REVOLT!!!!!!!!

In revolt to the "relic" trend, We should All go to our local music stores ( Wal-Mars espeacialy ) and sling all of the new glossy guitars across the parking lots and rub them with 40 grit sand paper and tell the shop keepers that we are helping to increase the value of their invetory LOL.....
 
Leo never gets the credit he deserves, a freakin' genius he was. In the late 50's and early 60's, you could not give away a Les Paul, everyone wanted a Jaguar, Strat or a Tele. Leo came out of nowhere, and ripped Gibson a new asshole, forcing Gibson to warehouse NOS till '68.

So now they are milking the legend.

It is a known fact that guitarists in general are the most conservative breed in the universe. Most guitarist view of heaven is using a pick from the mid 50's to play a guitar from the mid 50's through an amp from the mid 50's. :p
So what are you surprised about? When you can't get hold of a guitar from the mid 50's, the second closest to heaven you can get is a guitar that looks like it's from the mid 50's where the manufacturer claim it sounds like one too!

I would like to own everything you mentioned, and have a '57 Chevy parked in the garage for driving to choice gigs.

Wouldn't even have to be clean . . .
 
I played one out of sheer boredom. The feel sterile. They look trashed but since it is new it doesn't have any character.
 
I am very fortunate to own real relics: 1954 Fender Deluxe, 1963 Gibson ES 125 TCD, and a 1955 Buick Super Fireball V8 painted black with flames. I know some guys will argue that their new "relic" and reisure crap doesn't go out of tune, blow tubes, or head gaskets, but I whouldn't trade my old worn out gear for anything. These reisue and "relic" guitars and amps are sold to make money for a industy, and they sound that way. Stiff cold and sold out. The real vintage stuff has the age, the sound, the tone, the smell of smoke and have charater and integrity etched into their wooden bodies by REAL honkytonk scars. Not some fake superficial cosmetic aging designed by a power tie clad marketing ANAL-ist who doesn't have a clue about you or your music. If you want a real "relic", buy a guitar you like- new,used,vintage or otherwise; love it, cherish it and play the hell out of it untill the paint fades away and the very wood it's made of bleeds...........

Some guys like their guitars to be red with black stripes and a single humbucker.

Some guys like them to be the black body of one strat and the maple neck of another strat.

Some guys like them to be metallic green with a 3-D skull holograph in there, too.

Some guys like their guitars to look like they've been run over by a burning tank.

Fender Relics

Ok......ok..........
We all know that the relic Fenders are out there for the few really fanatical players.I have only played one,and I have to admit-----it was a great guitar.It was extremely beat up,more than any photos that I had seen,a Mary Kay model.But it did look and feel like a real worn out strat!
Why?!? I don't know why.Maybe they are made because some of us just can't wait for our own axes to gather moss.Like I said,I can't say yay or nay,since this is the only one I've played or seen.But they are made in the Custom Shop.The story we got from our Fender Rep was that they were originally made for the Stones to go on tour...they didn't want to take out the vintage pieces this time,but they didn't want new looking reissues.Hmmmmmmmmm.......who knows.I have a '62 Strat (what's left of one),and I've owned others.....yet my favorite strats now are a Japanese '57 reissue,and a Japanese '88 Strat .Absolutely great guitar.Not that I'm going to get out the sandpaper and stripease to make it look older...........LOL
 
When I was a kid in the 60s, I couldn't afford new guitars and had to buy used 50s axes.I had a melody maker and a junior and bought a late 30s ES125 for $150 when I was in my jazz phase.Sigh...

You know quality.I too have owned these budget Gibsons and let them go.I recently acquired a mid
'60's double cut Melody Maker with that absolutely gorgeous
fat neck,and I'm not letting this one go!Who can deny (er,if you are near my age,that is)listening to Mountain and hearing the great tones that Leslie West squeezed from a hunk of mahogany with a P-90 on it?I recently found out that because of Leslie,Martin Barre of Jethro Tull bought a Junior,and used it for the whole Aqualung album,through a Hiwatt!Now,those are some juicy tones as I remember.Any-
way,it was nice to hear someone mention these great axes
again,and I am always on the search for one under a bed somewhere (hey,they are still out there!).
 
SO, what's next? Relic amps. I can just imagine a whole army of fender factory workers promptly dispatched to move all re-issue tweed coverd cabinets to the "Vintage-izing Department" to recieve rips, tears, beer stains,chipped corners, and cigarette burns. While they are at it, why not pour salt water over the electronics and install old dry rotted speakers so they can sell us "Instant Vintage Tone".........
