the tone of tubeness

chessnubs is right. The transformer contained in most old tube designs that have gained legendary status impart the character of which we highly regard not the tube. (unless of course you are purposefully over driving the tube) Tube designs can be very clean, quiet and natural sounding such as the DW Fearn preamp I own. For example the sound of the Universal Audio products come from their proprietary 610 transformers which people actively search for and purchase such transformers. Although I do like to overdrive the units sometimes!

I used to think this warm stuff was BS too. Then I see Charles Dye(first man to produce a #1 hit TOTALLY ITB, ricky martins livin la vida loca) he throws around the term warming things up before going in to the computer with vintage equipment and warming things up using plugs...seems to use warming plugs a hell of a lot too when mixing...he's guest moderating @ www.gearslutz.com if yall wanna inquiry. I for one am gonna try using antares tube/psp vintagewarmer/magneto a lil more on individual tracks and see what's up...YMMV

Man, all I can say about that tune is it sure is warm. I'm gonna' have to try this magneto thing so I can be like Menudo.

Warm is the first thing that comes to mind, when I hear it.
:D And Ricky Martins' skin is light brown.....coincidence? I think not.

lmao....hey it was a hit thats more then i can say for myself and the rest of yall :p

and maybe it was the mastering too that added to its sounds?

Hey, I certainly wouldn't think of knocking Charles Dye, he is a hell of a talent. It just helps to proove the point that without specifics or a referance, warm doesn't mean dick. There isn't a sound that's universally accepted as being warm. To me, warm might be the sound of JPJs' bass line in HeartBreaker, to Charles Dye, it might be Ricky Martins' song, neither of us is right or wrong.

good point....just for clarification he was throwing the term around when mixing rock records not pop so maybe he doesn't feel pop mixes need to/should be warm?

Uh, yea.

Say, (speaking of mastering) I just pulled this wave form off the tape op board the other day.

Wanna' know what song it is? :D I'll give ya one guess. Hint: Is that what Mr. Dye means by "warm?"

Albums of some genres just can't compete unless they're maxed out like this... like hardcore or aggressive hip hop. It's not my preference either, but sometimes it has to be done.

Worse than mastering to these specs is getting a mix that looks like this - and the client wants to make it louder.

Hell yeah! I don't mind going for the volume to a point - But when it comes in maxed out wrong to begin with... Then they wonder why you can't hit it more... They I get all pissed...
