the right pick?

Hey guys,

do you have trouble finding the right pick to play with? When I play fast-shredding riffs with up/down strokes it keeps slipping out of my fingers. I've tried different kinds, mainly Dunlop and the best I found were triangular ones, but I'm still not completely satisfied. Any suggestions?

i prefer the dunlop's x-h .....they flex verry little i like that .... when i get sweaty they get a little slippery ... i wash my hands beteween set's ... that seems to help ... i always try to use a fresh clean pick every show .... in case they get slippery during a set i keep some taped to the corner of my amp or the singer's mic stand ........ :cool:
 
My favorites are the Dunlop Gator Grips.
I also really like the Big Stubbies for their feel on the strings, but I think they sound funny.

I've never had an issue with the pick slipping out of my fingers, so I don't know what to tell you there. The Gator Grips seem to have a good gripping surface. I use the Black ones.
 
thanx for the quick replies! I've got friend of mine who told me to drill little holes in them. Don't know if that will work...... :p
 
The gator grips come with a chalky like substance on them. They feel pretty good, I used them for years until going to Clayton picks.

i remember a few years ago i would rough up some pick's w/ sand paper before a gig ...... that worked great .... dont know why i havent done that latley ???? maby i will try it this weekend :cool:
 
You will never drop a Snarling Dogs pick unless you want to. Even then you might have a hard time!

I swear by them.

I will second the Snarling Dog's!!

I also like the Dunlop Jazz III picks, purely for attack.

I absolutely second that.

One more vote for the Dunlop Jazz, but I prefer the Tortex Pitch Black Jazz to the Nylon Jazz III's although I play both quite a bit.

I had trouble with hand fatigue playing a bass with a pick. Hard hitter, had to squeeze too much. Then I tried those with my guitar, fast picking, great.!!

Now I use those with bass and guitar.

..noticed that I actually can't play some basslines of mine, or guitar-riffs, without the sharp edge anymore... :eek: :o
 
my fave

the standard dunlop tortex are my favourites. theyre just perfect. i use the darkish green ones, 88's i think. nothing beats em.

+1 dunlop jazz 3's.. the black ones only.. the red ones are kind of soft or squishy or somethin.. they just feel wierd.

i cant stand playing electric or acoustic with any other picks. i carry a couple of the little dunlops in my wallet and a couple in my pockets at all times.. including right now.. :)

a few of my friends use them now after trying mine.

the only thing i do is scratch a couple of diagonal lines on each side with my pocket knife and they are good to go. i've literally never dropped one on stage.. and my hands sweat a bit under the lights etc.

they are wierd to get used to at first.. only a small corner will stick out past your finger, but the control and attack for fast picking is like nothing else ive tried. and you can easily strum open or barre or chug away at galloping riffs etc. they also dont go as deep between the strings while you play, which feels smoother for string skipping and sweeping, etc. i really dont break strings ever.

to me they are literally the perfect pick. you might hate 'em..
 
I use the yellow Claytons. Never had much of a problem with them slipping out of my hands. I absolutely love the feel these things have against the strings.
 
I've been useing Clayton picks for years. I use the modified triangle shape, 3 points with a rounded surface between the points. Even if they slip a little it is easy to rotate the pick and get another point in the right position to keep playing. These are slightly larger than the average "teardrop shape" pick but smaller than most triangle picks. For what it's worth, I've tried a variety of shapes and textueres but keep comming back to these, plus I've never broken one of them.
 
Okay, so I tried to use my Jazz III picks again last night. After sticking with it for a good hour I decided that maybe I do like 'em. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to try and switch. I'll keep at it for a while.

Also of possible significance to the OP, the drag against the strings is noticably less with the Jazz III's compared to more traditionally shaped picks. That might help with the grip issue too.
 
For electric, I like the 1mm Big Stubby. For acoustic, I like the .60mm Ultex.
