The Onyx 1620 mislead me

I dont think you will find a ton of mixers with that feature, direct outs are just that, DIRECT outs straight from the preamp. If you must record with EQ, there should be a "stereo mix" out in the mixer (there is on my tascam) so just solo the track and pan the track hard right or left in you need mono or leave it in stereo
 
Yeah the alesis digital mixer has horrible preamps. I went with a firepod instead and will buy a simple analog mixer later on. :p :D
 
The general rule is that while you may want to use a limiter / compressor while recording, but EQ is for processing AFTER you record.

Right, and that's why I went for the firepod and then I'm going to buy a good compressor because I'll need later on for dialog anyway. ;)
