I heard it as KISS-ish too. For real. Change that if it bugs you.

I'll have to, because now that you guys mentioned it, I totally hear it as KISS, too. :(

I don't hate KISS, but other than "Revenge" (I LOVE "Spit"), I'm not a fan. And I think Rick Derringer played most of the tracks on that album anyway.

"God Gave Rock and Roll To You". Seriously? That tune is about as cringe-worthy as rock music gets.

Man, all KISS after 1977 is pretty bad. Early KISS is pretty solid basic rock and roll. Then they went poppy and disco....and then 80s glam and it just kept getting worse.

Actually, you're right. I had their frist album, with "Strutter", etc...It was pretty good. But at that time, I was such an Alice Cooper fan that I thought any band that wore make up was just copying him. I had trouble liking them simply because of that. 13 year old logic.

Actually, it's a lot of your Amplitube tracks. I figured having Greg's real Marshalls and your Amplitube tracks as a reference, I've got a pretty good range of sounds to refer to.

Wow...Amplitube huh??? I guess that sim sounds better than I thought...

OK thanx, I'll try notching 300-ish and see what happens. KISS, eh? That's a shame. Since I have to re-track, maybe I'll re-write that part, too. :D

Thanx dudes. Gives me something to go on.

Well, the notch thing I keep mentioning isn't a have-to, rule or anything, I've just found in my tracks it helps kill a little boxy-ness I seem to always have....

I personally think the whole song sounds a little like KISS dude, don't take offense, it's actually a compliment from me...:D.

Haha, that could be right. I think they probably copied a little theatrical darkness from Alice and a little femglam from the NY Dolls. The NY Dolls were the kings (or queens, if you will) of NYC when KISS was getting started.

Holy shit, the opera! Man, the only way you could get me to sit through 3 hours of fat ladies in metal bra's would be if the opera was about ME!

Der Ramislaus.
Fat chicks in metal bras would have been an improvement. This was just abysmal.

KISS
KISS

OK, in the name of hopefully, Un-KISSing this thing, I re-wrote that opening riff. I had to re-track it anyway, since it was out of tune. So, hopefully I killed 2 birds with one stone.

I'm not sure if I like the snare now, it's a little box-y. I might re-track the drums, too. But that's not what this thread's for, just sayin'.

I played a gig with a Ramones Trib tonight. They weren't too bad, but certain bits sucked. "Johnny" was great. He had a cheapo Mosrite clone that didn't sound too bad through his battered Marshall combo and he performed well - downstrokes all the way through for the record, Greg :D Dee Dee cared not one fuck about authenticity. He was rubbish. Joey did a reasonable job. The worst thing was when the song was counted in.. "wanchewtreefawww"....... there was a half-beat time-lag for the song to come in. I think the drummer was on fucking tramadol or something.

Haha, you know what's weird? The real Ramones did that too for some reason on their late-career live recordings.

Skip to around 2:15 to hear it.

That's some serious energy, man!

Tight, and the sound is actually pretty good.

Just curious, after you telling us how long it took one of their albums to go gold, etc....Are/were these guys rich? Like rock star rich?

Yeah, for a band that "couldn't play", they were tight as shit and a finely tuned, well-oiled machine. Very precise. Like military precision. It was amazing.

Well, Joey and Johnny, the singer and guitar player, ended up very rich when it was all said and done. They were original founding members, and Johnny ran the Ramones very strictly. It was his business. Joey too, but Johnny called the shots to get them going. In the 90s they started getting a ton of movie soundtrack deals, beer commercials, baseball teams would play their songs between innings, etc. Pop culture finally caught up to them, so they started cashing in. They never did anything un-Ramones-like though. I'd hear their songs in a beer commercial, and I was like, okay, at least it's beer. They never had Ramones tracks selling insurance or anything. But anyway, Johnny and Joey got rich. Johnny was super frugal an never spent any money and he retired loaded. Joey was very active in the very punk rock world of the stock market. Lol. The other less tenured, less invested Ramones didn't get the full benefits of being a founding Ramone, except for Dee Dee who was an original member and chief songwriter, even though he left in 89. So now that the key players are all dead, Johnny's wife and Joey's brother control the Ramones estate, and even though the two camps don't much care for each other, they're doing the legacy pretty good IMO.

They were also, like most underground bands, way bigger abroad than they were at home. They'd sell out stadiums in South america. They could only fill medium size clubs in the US.

Really not a kiss fan.. aside from a disco track they did that was on a TV advert for my favourite brand of coffee.

My only Ramones albums were All The Stuff and more Vol 1 and 2. They both have a fuck load of songs on them.

Joe Strummer didn't die particularly rich either, apparently he only had a few hundred grand which would be plenty for your average pleb but a bit surprising for the lead singer of one of the best bands ever

Opera: I was quite surprised just how bad it was! I've always been a bit curious about opera - how they get a script into the score - but it was just ridiculous, really un-lyrical - sounded like complete non-sense - incoherent babbling while wandering up and down scales in really un-melodic way.

Bit of amp tweaking and a re-tracking of We Are The Road Crew, haven't written the outro solo yet - its quite long so might take me a fair bit of fiddling to come up with something that isn't either repetitive or just nonsense.

Generally pretty pleased with the tone of the rhythm guitar.

Yeah that is better. Less boxy, less murky, good meat-crunch to it. Much better. Now onto those vocals....

Okay, here's the "Jimi tone" I promised, and I use "Jimi tone" very loosely. I didn't even really try because he never sounds the same on fucking anything. I just plugged the Strat into the Plexi and cranked her up.

Fender Strat - bridge pickup
Marshall Plexi 100w 1959
Presence - 4
Bass - 8
Mid - 3
Treb - 7
Inputs jumpered
Vol 1 - 7
Vol 2 - 3
Marshall 1960A 4x12 - Celestion Greenback
Shure SM 57 on axis, on grill, halfway to edge.
No EQ or FX in DAW

Let me stand next to your...wait, no, never mind

(You can hear the guitar cut out before my bad ass solo. Wonky input jack)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And here's on more, just fucking around before putting it back on the stand for another few years.

Fender Strat - various pickups
Same settings as above, except....
Vol 1 - 2
Vol 2 - 6
Same cab and mic.

Strats Suck

Haha, it's not like you to get your shred on, Greg.

Sounds good though, that tone would well on your more punky stuff, particularly some clash covers or something.

Haha, well, I don't see that happening, but who knows? Maybe one day I'll wanna dial up a shitty strat sound. :D

I actually don't hate the second, cleaner clip. The "Jim" clip is poo.

RAMI: The last clip you posted sounds pretty good to me, especially the rhythm guitars. The intro guitar is ok, but personally I'd like a little more high-end cut, but that's just a personal preference of mine dude...Pretty rockin' tune there Rami....:).

JDOD: Clip sounds good man, I know you're not to the mixing stage yet, but I'd like to hear those vocals up in the mix dude, I'm impressed...:thumbs up:.

Greg: Pretty cool man, I like the 2nd clip best with the fx dude...While I've never tried to cop a Hendrix tone myself, I'd say you're in the ballpark & then some with both clips man...You should've stuck a little wah in there too....:D.

I actually really like the first clip. The pickups have that single-coil low-output attack to them, I really like that. Pair this setup with a meaty fuzz pedal and there is some seriously good tone in there. I think that'd make a great texture to use in a song, just as a contrast to the humbucker/P90 sound. Don't dismiss the Strat so easily, I say keep it on deck for those times when you need a part to "klang" a little.

The 2nd clip is kind of in-between for me. Not clean enough to be chimey and sparkly, but not dirty enough to have attitude. Although it sounds better when you dig in a bit in the upper register. I do like the tremolo though :D
