Yep - been using a JCM900 dual reverb for years. Here's my settings. I actually use the bass knob lol... Just listen to my soundclick for samples if you like examples. Definitely not too much bass.

Playing the Les Paul Trad Pro lead pickup-
First 2/3 is the Marshall Class 5 running through the greenback.
Last bit is through the 10" speaker in the combo.
I played it cranked to get the dirt tone.
I think it could have sounded better with a little less bass.
I kinda like the sound of the stock speaker, less "mushy."
I think it is well matched to go with the amp.

Bass- 4
Mid - 5
Treble - 7

Cool sounds Sam, I like the Marshall clip a lot better than the Vox myself, & the 10" in the combo sounds best of all of 'em to me......makes me wonder how my new cab is really gonna sound with the Blackstar......Suppose I'll find out in about 12 hours or so.....still waiting patiently.......

The Class 5 may be something I'll check out pretty soon, sounds good. I'd love to find a Marshall that doesn't shake the walls, but still gives "that" sound......I may be chasing something that isn't possible though.....

I'll post some clips tomorrow, after I get the new cab.....

Obviously you like it, then. What is the character of the lead channel like? Can you get a fairly rich crunch on it, not too dirty? I don't like the lead channel on my TSL, it's a bit "honky" on a low gain setting.

I'm not a fan of the Class 5. I think I liked your Vox sounds better. I always plug into Class 5's when I see one, just to hopefully change my mind, but I'm never satisfied with them. They always sound thin to me, and then you crank it, and it turns into flabby mush. Meh, I think Marshall dropped the ball on those. Same with those silly little one watt re-issue amps.

Yeah I know what you mean, I bought it just for a practice amp.

It still sounds better than my solid state Vox Pathfinder,
and it has a .3w switch so I can play it in my living room.

I think I like it, and I think I can get it sounding better
by tweaking the tone controls a bit.

Someday I'll get a 2x12 combo.

I think it sounds really good, however, if I have it right, it is basically using a preamp tube for a power tube.
I think the physics involved are going to prevent it from sounding like a full sized power tube.
In a certain sense, Greg was right about getting a real Marshall for a couple hundred bucks more used.
The little one still has its place however (for instance, my wife hasn't noticed it being here, yet :p).

I'm looking forward to your clips, my new greenback sounds completely different from my alnico.

Without looking at the specs, I think the class 5 uses an EL84 power tube which is small like a preamp tube.

I could be wrong though.

Many small low Watt tube amps use EL84s

Finally got the new cab today, & this is the first time I've mic'd it up, so it probably sucks. Kinda fizzy, most likely due to the mic placement. I have noticed already, the new cab's mids are a lot more prominent, & it distorts a lot easier. As usual, I'm sure the sounds will get better with time, as I learn the cab.......

Ibanez RG350DX, stock pickups, bridge position....

SM57 on the cap/cone thing, about an inch from the grill...

HT-5 settings:
Gain: 2-3
Volume: 8
Bass: 8
Mids: 4
Treble: 7
ISF: 0

Overlook the shitty, sloppy playing (as usual, that's why I really like this thread!!!), just something off the top of my head. I was going for an AC-DC type tone, so the riffs I ended up playing probably sound like a few songs of theirs......

I had the cab in another room, so I'd be able to turn it up for the power tube saturation, & still be able to monitor what the mic was picking up through the daw....

It's a little fizzy, maybe too close to the center on the mic position, but it's really not bad to me. Leaving the mic there but tilting it off-axis a little might be all you need. I thought it sounded pretty good otherwise. Good playing too. What cab/speaker is that?

Hey miner - I like it. A little dark, a little fizzy but definitely usable.

Thanks guys, it's definitely a different animal than the stock Blackstar speaker, I can get it to distort with the preamp on 1-2......Maybe I should've gotten another cab/speaker, but I'd planned to get a Greenback cab anyway, so the other can just wait a little while as I think it sounds pretty good, actually better than the stock speaker in my amp......

It's a Randall 1x12, with a 25w Celestion Greenback. The cab itself is a lot bigger than I thought it'd be. I guess that's why it has quite a bit of bottom. I still can't believe the mids though, really cut through a lot more than the Blackshit speaker......

Dunno what I'm gonna buy next, another cab (with a V30), or another amp. The Blackstar sounds pretty decent through the new cab, but I just wonder how another/different amp would sound.....Suppose I'll find out Thursday, as I'm taking all my gear to the church, & will have acess to a few different amps, including an old 80's Carvin tube head......

Thanks again, back to tweaking........

Here's another tone for today, Ibanez middle pickup (single coil, going for a Strat type sound)>POD X3Live Rat distortion (simulated)>HT-5>rotary speaker & reverb in Reaper......

HT-5 clean channel:
Volume:10
Tone:10

POD's Rat sumulation:
Drive: 25
Gain: 100
Tone: 100

I used an ampsim's rotary speaker just for shits & giggles, with a reverb send trying for a Hendrix/Tower type thing. Same mic position as before, just moved the mic off axis a little to kill some of the fizz......

I can already hear/see, I'm gonna have to buy some real pedals (like an overdrive/distortion, chorus, flanger, etc), as this sounds ok, but the real deal would sound much, much better.....Again, the POD & ampsim stuff in the daw is ok, but the real thing would be a huge improvement.....

Pretty happy with the cab so far, to me, it does have a bit of a "vintage" sound to it....

So let me see if I understand this signal chain....

You went guitar to POD just for the distortion, then into the amp head, then into the cab, then into the DAW where you added a rotary effect and reverb? Did I get that right?

Sounds pretty good. I little thin to me, but the fizz is gone for sure. You captured it well. The rotary effect is too much for me though.

Right Greg,
Used the POD for just a little boost in gain, then into the amp, & the rotary speaker & reverb are from ampsims in the daw......

I agree, the rotary speaker thing is a little overboard, but could be useable in a mix, if turned I turned the effect down....

Thanks for the listen & comments man!!!

isn't it impossible to turn off the amp modeling in a POD?

I don't know about a POD, but I have a Digitech RP300a that you can bypass everything on. I use it for the wah only. Other than that, it's useless.

I have the POD X3 Live, which is the floor/pedalboard thing, & you can bypass everything on it......only thing I used on the clip from the POD was the od/distortion.....
