The New Tone Thread

I have my surf collection in the CD player (I know, ancient lol tech) tonight. For anyone who doesn't dig surf music, you should. Imho.

Thanks, yeah surf is great. It's been a big influence on me and I still play it and listen to it to this day. Ever heard Man or Astroman? Great surfpunk stuff.

The 900 only has the one input. This delay pedal is pretty amazing. I really like it.

i mighta told you on another thread- i saw them a bunch of times back in the early 90s when I lived down in GA with my band. they kicked serious ass live. the effects, voice-overs and sound effects they piped in from old sci fi movies pushed it over the top. a real multimedia experience on top of them being smoking player(S).

Surf tones!?! That Man/Astroman cut was pretty good.

Greg - I liked the second one better squeaky as it may be. I'm surprised the Marshall does clean that well though I probably shouldn't be. The first one was kinda sloppy and I don't mean the playing. The sound just didn't hold together well. On the chords the breakup was okay but it's like not fish - not fowl.

The flashback is a nice pedal. I got mine when I got their reverb pedal (thanks to Boob). Good stuff.

Thanks Lou. I know what you mean. I can't decide on either one. I'm gonna have to try em in a mix.

So what do people listen to instead of CD's?

MP3's are lower quality aren't they?

My wife, kids, and seemingly everyone on the internet seems to listen to Mp3s so I sometimes feel out of date mentioning CDs. Music is my one purist sanctuary when it comes to technology, or lack thereof.

A 320 kb/s MP3 on it's own isn't typically noticeably lower quality than a CD wav. It just depends on how you listen to it. I listen to MP3's more often than CDs. My phone is my MP3 player. I just hook my phone up to my car and let er rip.

It's funny really....I used to make tapes of my albums and listen to them. Then I got CD's of my albums and listened to them. Now I have MP3 versions of my CDs and listen to them. Between streaming and what I load onto my phone myself, I've got more music than I could ever listen to, or want to listen to.

i have no problem for regular 320 mp3. but honestly, terrabyte drives are so cheap now. I got an empty NAS, loaded it with 2 1TB drives and ripped my entire cd collection to raw .wav files. The NAS has a streaming media server. I have a wireless DLINK streamer box hooked to my stereo (about 100 bucks). Hundreds of cds on demand.... Fun. I can also stream to any of the laptops, desktops, xbox, etc. This has the side effect of letting me check out mixes on a whole shitload of setups.

OK, thanks.
I've got a zillion CD's and most of them are ripped to mp3 (like 28,000 songs).
I still like to listen to CD's at home because I'm pretty technology impaired.

I still think the CD is a good way to listen to music - if you wanna pay for it. Back when MP3 players were limited to small storage, I burned tons of my own CD's just like I made mix tapes back in the day. Grab a bunch of songs and put em on a CD. Now though, MP3 players, and especially smartphones, are more considerably powerful than the computers that put men on the moon. It's easier to just load up a device and set it to play than it is to fumble around with CDs. And streaming is even easier. I open the Rhapsody app on my phone, type in "Motorhead", and BAM, every album they ever made is sitting there waiting for me. I plug it into the aux jack on my car stereo and away I go speeding like a madman around the city to the soothing sounds of Lemmy singing Overkill. No CDs to deal with, and it costs like 5 bucks a month. Sounds good enough to me.

Here's some new tone....trying for the surfy twang again.

Two clips merged into one. Both same amp settings - except "Sleepwalk" done with the Strat mid pickup, "Walk Don't Run" done with the Strat bridge pickup.

Marshall JCM900 MkIII > TC elec Flashback Delay in efx loop > Avatar 2x12 w/ Vintage 30's > SM57 on grill just off-center > Reaper > slight spring reverb added in DAW. No EQ.

First of all, Greg - great playing. No issues with that at all. :D You can wave your arms about and protest all you like, but you're bloody good at this stuff.

As this is about tone my only gripes are:

1: that the whole thing is somewhat too clean if anything. There should be various sources of slightly lo-fi creakiness to the sound (only in my opinion, which might be shit anyway).
2: I think the slapback echo is too obtrusive (loud) and digital, lacking the warmth and fuzziness of a WEM Copicat or similar tape delay, but that might be to do with it being isolated from a mix.

3: My last criticism is that I think the sound lacks the really rich bottom end of surf guitar in the chords, but I think that's to do with the guitar. How I wish I could play this stuff and do some toanz with the Jag, but I fear it'll be too much work for somebody like me.

Anyhow, respect for keeping this thread going, posting tones up for criticism, Greg. I feel a bit of a dick criticising them when I haven't posted up in ages.

Cool thanks Bubba. All of that is noted and will be addressed. I have a kind of raunchy surf-a-billy song I'm writing right now and I'm working on the tones for it, so we'll see how it goes. :)

holy CRAP!!!!

too many gigs ................... gotta go! ..........................

Just thought I'd post a few words here after reading the entire thread the last two nights. Good reading by the way (even though my wife keeps interrupting with the honey-do list!).
Greg, I really liked the clips you put up. My ears are not sensitive enough to hear the finer details some might point out, so as a "commoner" I would say it sounds great. Listen to a few seconds of "Man and Astroman"...it reminded me of Rev. Horton Heat. I love that sound!
Just wondering Sam, are you a T.Rex fan due to your username? Back in the day I was the only one I knew of who listened to T.Rex, Slade, and Mott the Hoople.
Speaking of listening to CDs and Mp3s. I just recently was given a collection of albums (early Stones, Neil Young, CSN&Y, The Who, etc) so picked up a turntable and have been listening to vinyl. There is a warmth about vinyl (even I can detect it) that just doesn't come across on CDs or Mp3s.
So anyhow, like the thread and maybe if I get gutsy at some time in the future I'll post something. I do have some live recording of a band I play in, but some problems with the recording I'll have to try to fix at some point.

gotta get me one of those Flashback delays.

Sounds good to me ..... i don't find it too clean personally, it's my idea of what clean means.
I'd dial back the delay level just a bit .... it's fighting the main line for dominance. Don't back it off much though.

Sounds cleaner and more surfy that I'd ever have though that amp would,
Nice!

Time to sleep .... my weekend is stupid .... just got home from my second gig of the day and have to be setting up for my first of two tomorrow by 10am. Whee! I have to set up one complete set of gear at Sloppy Joe's (PA/Keyboard/guitar rig. mics --stands etc) ... then go to the Shores and set up a complete second set of gear .... play 'till three and then frantically tear down .... throw it into the truck and haul ass to Sloppy's where I get started about 15 minutes late (supposed to go on at 4:00 ) .... no biggie ..... I just play over at the end.
Then once that gig's over I tear down and push it the 1/2 mile to my truck and drive home ......

Funny you mention metamucil ....... I need some.
