the mxl 770 question

this mic has a high pass filter on it but and the switch looks liek this

the switch on the right....there is a solid line and the other has small incline on the begginin of the line (description of the switch)

my question is with switched on the high pass filter and what would be a good explanation on what this is used for and why i would use this option?
 
Hi pass means low frequency rejection. It passes only the high frequencies within it's band. When you turn it off, you get the full range of the microphone. Reduce low frequency rumble. You need to know more abou the actual frequency pass of the switch...check the manufacturer's spec sheet.
