That's the "original" "CLASSIC" meaning for the term!

You had to run "patch cables" literally between the oscillators, filters, envelopes and so forth to get a "synth" device to work...

Therefore it was called a "patch" because of all the different combinations of cables that were required to make different sounds...

Of course back then it was a "clarinet-patch" or -"Oh Boy! - A "BRIGHT" "Clarinet Patch!"
 
In the olden days, I think they named the patches something like... "What the heck does this sound like?" or if it was bright "What the heck does this bright thing sound like?"

You also might want to research getting a midi contoler and connecting it to your pc, you could have thousands of sounds and there is very good sequencing software that you can buy. and here's another bonus if you don't have a pro sound card it doesn't matter, the joystick plug is more then likely a midi in and out as well.
