The Industry Standard.

Which program is generally considered the industry standard when it comes to recording music?

• Cubase
• Sonar 5
• Pro Tools
• Other

I would like to get strarted with a software that can (a) grow with me and (b) perhaps prove a useful skill in the future. WHat would the experts advise?

A lot of people use ProTools, but it's not inherently any better than other programs like Cubase, Nuendo, Logic, etc.... as a matter of fact, from an interface point of view, it's actually several cuts lower than the others, IMO.

Pro Tools is known as the "industry standard" i use Pro Tools, but i wouldnt say its a LOT better than any other programs, i havent tried many others, the reason i use it is basically because i learnt on it and most studios around here use Pro Tools, so i can just take my tracks to and from the studio. A downfall with Pro Tools is the LE can only use up to 32 tracks. You can't go wrong with Pro Tools, Cubase, Nuendo, Sonar etc they all have their pros and cons.

Alot of the "experts" use the full blown HD Pro Tools systems (TDM) around here. Nuendo and Digital Performer are others i seen often here.

ProTools is considered the industry standard, but (excuse the comparision), it's like saying the Playstation is the best videogames console...it has just built up the reputation of being the best program. I myself haven't tried it!

Nevertheless, if you want something to grow on you, Logic is a good one. Fine, it's insanely difficult to learn to use (for some), but after a week or two, you'll be pretty good at it. And you keep learning more and more every day about it!

Industry standard

Pro Tools is the industry standard but its way overpriced hardware is a drag so i never really could afford it, so i started up with nuendo 2, and to tell you the truth with all the plug-ins out there the program blows my mind its unreal i get any result i want using it!!!

Thanks for all the hlpful advice. It's good to know. I've been using CUBASE 5 but I don't really like it much and was thinking of switching (some programs are just more intuative than others even if there is a steeper learning curve). I'm sure I'll have more questions as I save $$ up for the new software.

The primary attraction for ProTools is the HD system, with gobs of DSP power for running tons of tracks and a few hundred plugins. If PT didn't have the Accel Cards it wouldn't be near as popular.

I believe the reason PT is the standard is that they have been around so dang long. Didn't they just celebrate a 20 year anneversary?

shit, i haven't heard that name in forever in conjunctions with non-linear DAWs
are they still around? I think I may even have some old interfaces sitting around in a closet
