well..i got the unit today!

i think it is pretty great...easy and fairly intuitive...

BUT i my first attempt at recording had a problem...the hard disc was making this "tick tock" sound that would be totally unacceptable if i were using a live mike in the same room....i am unsure why it did this....i recorded from a drum machine....it makes the noise during playback too, though not broadcast through the speakers....the interesting part is that when i play the demo, i don't get this noise...so i'm unsure if it was a fluke or a malfunction or user error just yet...and tonight i'm not gonna have time to find out!

my other concern is with data backup...i have not found any reference to backing up by any other method than SCSI...i hope this is not the case because i believe the tascam i just bought don't gots no SCSI....

anyhoo....i am excited to dive in, but have a very busy schedule, but i will keep folks updated on this unit if there is any interest...?

i would be very interested in updates and reviews as you find time...this will be my first shot at homerecording and i'm leaning towards buying this unit...any feedback would be extremely helpful, and appreciated : )

have fun!!!
thanks....

I only have two words for you as far as "back-up" goes...

JAZ DRIVE

It will hook-up with no problem and you can copy everything on the unit's harddrive to it. And you'll still be able to re-mix, change effects, etc. etc etc.
When you want to do mixes, just use the s/pdif-out (on the Akai) to the s/pdif-in of the Tascam... no problem!

That clicking you hear is the unit's harddrive. It's digital, so it's harddrive will make clickety-click noises from time to time, just like a PC.
Just make sure that you don't record with a condenser mic that's set-up right next to the unit and you'll be fine... (been there, done that!). As long as your mic is more than 4 feet away, it should be no problem.
My Korg D8 does the same thing. Once I realized it, I kept the condenser mic away from the unit and it worked out fine. I have since built a vocal booth for my studio, so I don't even have to worry about the jets that fly over my house anymore, let alone the faint clicks of a digital recorder.
Keep us informed of your experiences with the new machine.
Enquiering minds want to know!!!
