I'm continuing to mix for my friend - y'all's comments were *invaluable* last time, and so I thought I'd come back to the well.

As before, I'm only mixing - I can pass along performance/tracking/arrangment/song comments, but I only have direct control over the mix.

Edit: There are some bass issues. I'll fix those and post again

Nice pedal steel, perfect level on it. It's there but not out front. The acoustic sounds good to me, nice and large. Maybe has a little more pick attack than I'd expect for an arpeggiated line like this, sounds like a perfect candidate for fingerpicking instead of flatpicking. Vocals sound good too, especially the backing vocals. Reverbs, panning placements...my novice ears can't pick out anything to change. I like the singer's voice, reminds me a little of Phosphorescent.

Well, I'm not much help other than to say this is very well done. Tell the band good job, and that they should give their engineer a raise.

Yup, I completely agree with this. Sounds very nice, love the arrangement and the mix. I can't pick out anything I'd change. Good job all round

Thanks! I still have to fix the low hz. I moved my mixing rig to a new room and I don't think I have the subwoofer calibrated right. My acid test is my minivan - this song was shaking and rattling the doors, but a dirty south song on the radio at a similar volume did not - something's wrong :)

Great job on the mix. I think the mix is radio ready. I like the song, but it seems to drag on a little longer than I would like. I understand you are not part of the songwriting on this one.

I have a sub on my home stereo, and there have been songs that make it boom. This one didn't. If I were to say one thing, the acoustic seemed to be just close to competing with the vocals since they were so soft. But I mean just every so slightly. I mean pinch.

Dude, to me, this is about as professional sounding as I've ever heard in here. I'm not exaggerating. Not to get too gay about it, but I got lost into this mix. The sound is full and balanced and clear and rich and it just swirled around me. Truly spectacular. Very well done. Maybe the best mix I've ever heard in here.

Anyone trying to do intimate stuff like this needs to take notes. This is how it's done, motherfuckers.

Yeah, right. Something this good, the only question I got is whether posting it in this forum means you're slumming or whether this forum's reached the point where it's attracting stuff like this. Either way, really nice to listen to.

wow - thanks! If you doubt my HR credentials, go listen to some of the crap I've posted here before (or better yet, don't). Let's be honest, it's impossible to completely differentiate the song, the performance, and the tracking from the mix, and the mix is absolutely coasting on quality ingredients here. I've got bunch more of his songs to mix and then he'll do a release of some sort. I'll take the compliments as an indicator to keep moving in the direction I'm going, and use the same strips / workflow for the other songs.

On the HR cred side, it's worth noting that he tracked everything in his apartment, I think using a fairly run-of-the-mill Lexicon interface (not sure which one, but I'll find out). I lent him some mics and stuff. The mic that features most prominently is none other than the TnC ACM 6802T that I got in the group buy some years ago, that was subsequently radically modified by Marik on the board here ( https://homerecording.com/bbs/equipment-forums/microphones/6802-mods-258565/ )

No, my comments weren't directed toward any issue of HR credibility - you've got a ton of posts to your name, after all. But the mix is so good that I wondered why you were posting it here. You know, there are people who post here whose mixes I don't review cuz they don't need any help. It's my issue, I guess. I think of this forum as a place where people are still really learning about mixing and where second opinions are crucial. Okay, okay - so second opinions are useful even if you're a pro. But the reason pros don't ask for input in this forum is cuz this place is still a long way from pro. So my attitude is sort of reverse snobbery. I don't ask 'Are your mixes good enough to post here?' I ask 'Are your mixes shitty enough to post here?' Probably everybody's gonna hate me now. :D

Probably everybody's gonna hate me now. :D

I hate you now. :laughings:

A few things that are nice about posting, people get to hear a good HR result. Plus the second set of ears to confirm.

I understand your meaning, but glad he posted.

Nice rich tone on everything. Real good performances - everywhere.

I think the bass is kind of boomy.

Pops at :23. 1:52, 2:11, 3:03. Other spots too.

Sometimes it's tough to make out words here and there.

Great use of reverb. I hardly ever say that.

I agree the bass is boomy, and I'll look into the pops - I'm going to try and isolate the particular boomful frequency and deal with it - the song makes my minivan shake at times, and so I'm going to so a sine sweep in the van and see where the shakies are.

It's good to hear the reverb came out OK - I beat myself over the head for a couple of days because I added the reverb effects before I had really mixed and done much detail work - that's actually a really bad approach - I was swimming in audio-swill and getting more and more discouraged. I wound up backing out the reverb and starting over at one one point. So, lesson learned - reverb needs to come late in the process.

This is awesome man. I like the bass as it was. I'd personally choose to leave it as it is. It's a like a big hug. I love it. I dig the song too. you've got such a great marriage of all the humming vocals at the end. Every thing is knit so nice together. Outstanding job. I'd be interested in hearing more.

it's a great song, nothing sounds 'out of place' or wrong to me and it's rare I say that...listening on neumann monitors

I was tinkering with a
bass management" plug this arvo. Sanderson or something - Ethan Winer put me onto it.
Basicall select a freq & it (on a variable slope) can make the bass mono below the point.
It "tightens" the boom a little.
Not sure i it's applicable with this but mentioned it because boom was mentioned & there's some strong bass on one side at times.
My only critique is that I wanted to hear something panned on the otehr side of the steel. It isn't needed but my brain went looking.
It sounds lovely & I concur with the on the money comments from other folk.
Good one!
