How many starters did that Virago eat while you had it? Early Viragos had a horrible starter clutch design. I had a later-model one, paid quite a bit more than $300 for it, but sold it for more than I paid for it.
Actually, this thing sounded like the crankcase was filled with gravel, and the starter would skip and catch every time I tried to start it. I bought a shim kit for the starter and that solved the problem. The only problem that persisted was that the engine had very high compression and the battery would only turn the engine a few times before it would crap out. I put more batteries in it than starters. If it wasn't perfectly tuned in the carbs, it wouldn't start on the first few times I cranked it. The starter button said "push to start" and all too often, that's just what I had to do.
