and The Brain...
Well, we haven't been doing much music, and the little bit I've accomplished on my own has been more like practice than art...

So without further a-do, here's a Horrifying Enigma. It's slowly growing on me. Total production time to reach the website was 6 hours. That's a personal record for a completed song.

Gear used in the recording is listed in a link called 'Gear' off the homepage.

At least you have a sense of humor. I thought that was Beefheart in the middle there. A little too "Miami Vice" for my tastes but I'm not really an expert on this style. The recording sounds good except towards the end where the backward(?) stuff starts. Didn't have a lot of presence there.

Our Beefheart tune was this: http://www.the-boogiemen.com/The Boogiemen - Pamela's Got the Virus.mp3. ;)

Could you elaborate on the presence thing? I'm still looking to tweak the hell out of this song, so feedback's important (as so far you're the only one).

I don't know, maybe it's the pc speakers I'm listening on but it sounded a little buried and I thought it could come up perhaps. I was thinking about Radiohead's "Like Spinning Plates". In that tune the backwards stuff is right in your face.

I really dug that other tune. Could have been the Magic Band without the 4/4 beat. Love the harmonica. Nice job.

Oh, I understand now... I'll go try raising that loop and see how it sounds :) I'm a big Radiohead fan myself, so I know of what you speak. I wasn't looking for that effect, but I'm willing to see if it works.

Lew's a great blues player, and he ought to be after playing for 35 years :D

always an interesting listen with you..

it started off with great sounding drums but got real muddy/murky sounding when the guitars and bass came in.. good solid riff though! the vocal had a Zappa feel with a little more dirt.. the guitars sound bassy and the bass sounds a bit woofy.. vocal came in pretty loud!

Pinky on the Brain...

SWEEET fade-in... LOVE the kick drum sound... perfect ambience on it. Everything is really well defined...

...well... the gtr/bass sound not so much... roll off some lows on gtr...? Try and fit the bass in better w/EQ? There's a lot "GOING ON" here, so to speak...

bit of a 250Hz hump in the spoken word part....

Cool doesn't quite define this... edgy... yes, but more... smug, edgy, cool... yes all those.

Superb percussion. Would like more CRACK out of the snare sound... but then who doesn't like CRACK? ;)

Nice reverse-echo stuff...

Hah... sense of humor... bingo. Bratwurst. Leiderhosen. Vestigial tail. Coconuts.

Well, cool... I came back expecting to have to bump it for some more responses...

K, I thought the guitars weren't bassy enough, and there wasn't enough bottom to the bass :p

As always, good ear none the less because I was wondering what was causing the 'muddiness' during the musical passages... so I trimmed the guitars <300hz, trimmed the bass a little <200hz but raised the bass track 2db in the overall mix.

Lowered the final vocal a bit, more whispery now ;)

Also raised the reverse portion at the end.

EQ'ed the vocal tracks at the 250 mark as suggested, my ears didn't notice a difference but if it was noted I fixed it lol

Glad you liked it participant. We were going to do some silly subliminal stuff, but decided that NOT having it would be just as funny for anyone who actually brings this into soundforge and tries to find anything :p

Here's the final mix then: Horrifying Enigma

The loud instrumental w gtr/bass part works better now, but I'll defer to other ears for the rest... (for a while)... it's late and who knows how trustworthy the old headflaps are right now ;)

I'm sure there are other issues.. but the obvious bass/gtr thing's improved.

BTW where did verse 2 go? Was there one? It's late :(
