Not yet Q. He lives in Indian Hill from what I understand which puts him about 25 miles away.

Plus the IH folks tend not to mix with the common folk....;) *lol*

You can't even get into their country club unless you are "old money"...I'm sure Mr Frampton doesn't like that...

Oh yeah, the Mag we are being directed to is free...!

DUH! :D

Sure, I've seen EQ, Recording and Mix magazines.

EQ and Recording, I probably glanced at a few times on the newsstand, but never bought one. It probably didn't excite me too much, not that they're bad mags, or anything, I'm neutral on that.

Mix magazine, definitely is a pro-studio level mag, an "industry" mag. I've seen quite a more few Mix magazines, than the others, and I have a pretty good feel of what's in Mix. It's a gigantic, highly technical magazine, but the home user might tend to burn out on Mix, because it showcases all the gear that's usually way-way out of the reach of the common home recording enthusiast.

I picked up Home Recording magazine, I guess, primarily for the Frampton home-studio article.

-You may think Home Recording mag is 'sucky' or something, but I don't necessarily agree. I think this recording mag is as 'sucky' as the other ones, 'cause these mags are basically a vehicle to push the latest products, which BTW, I'm no big fan of. I'm a vintage reel analog home recording enthusiast, and theres virtually no mag that caters directly to my specific interests.

I don't feel the need to ogle over the latest portable digital workstation, or read reviews of the latest DAW software.

That's just not where my head's at.

I like when I can find general recording discussions in these mags, and not the product-specific stuff, necessarily.

-Hey, I just picked up this one Home Recording mag recently, and I typically don't follow those mags. I did follow them, years ago, but I basically got burned out on them, for the reasons listed above.

Dave,
You'll like TapeOp. I guarantee it. Not nearly as "glossy" as HomeRecording. I'm with Slack in thinking that I'm not learning too much from HomeRec... It is fun reading, tho, and I like the feature pieces like the one on Frampton, and the one on Will Lee (Bass player for Paul Schaeffer), and the one on Steve Vai....

I like EQ...

Good recording articles. Mix I agree is for the high-end pros...but it's still cool to drool...eh??

Tape Op is GREAT!! Especially for free... :)

Plus, how to turn an MXL2001 into a tube mic!

I loved that fucking article. I have been a subscriber for about a year now. Great rag.

I didn't mean to be rude by saying that Home Recording is a donkey sucking magazine, but it is :)

Naw, I'm just disappointed. I started reading it a year or two ago. My girlfriend and I would go at least once a month to a magazine store and then to a coffee shop...I'd always grab a Home Recording mag. I LOVED em. My girlfriend even got me a subscription, what a groovy chick! However, it just kinda dried up for me after a while. I mean they're still talking about the best way to put labels on CDR media and the difference between 16bit and 24bit and how to make the most out of your <insert brand here> do-it-yourself-bedroom-digital-virtual-recording-device. Really not a lot of creative information on just RECORDING or studio DIY....it really is just sort of "here's what's new in the world of cheap junk." When they do run a good DIY or recording article...they always blow over the important things. "first you get some wheels, then put them under a body, connect the engine, and congratuations, your first car."

So anyways, it is a good magazine when you're just getting your feet wet. In fact I'd even recommend it! But once you've made a few recordings and sent a few demos to your dear old mom, there's not much left except for Peter Frampton.

I don't even know why I'm arguing....just fun I suppose :)

What I like most about tape op are the interviews. You can tell that they're always done by people who love recording, because the articles always make me want to go record, not shopping. It's also cool because a lot of the studios they interview are real low-key small time outfits that produce decent results, which is sort of the next step for most of us!

What's the URL ???

What's the url of HomeRecording mag?

...[mental note: send a demo to Mom]...

I burn out on MOST magazines, after a long-enough time.

MIX magazine is definitely the pro-studio mag. The DIY advice you get in MIX is generally on how to mic a 24-piece orchestra, or the scoop on the latest $2000 mic. Anyway, it's a pro mag, and it has it's audience.

When I go to the bookstore.I skim thru all of them and I get the one that has something that interests me...Home Recording is well the least interesting..Recording has some really good stuff...Mix can be cool..Sound on Sound..Electronic Musican seems to have the better reveiws...Its a crap shoot from issue to issue on all of them though....

Right, they all vary from month to month, I'm sure, like anything else.

I used to get a home recording oriented mag called "Sound Option", which I think went out of business.

Anyway, long ago, I picked up on Sound Option Magazine, to get a feel for what the home-recording 'scene' is, and came to the conclusion: there is no scene.

HRcom is about as close to a real 'scene' that there is, in home recording.

Anyway, I burn out on most mags, after a while. I'm even burned out on "High Times", if you believe that or not. Haha.

Free is good. Free <anything> is good, put your own word there.

The DAVEMANIA Free 4-CD Set is good, and still available, you heard it here first, request yours at d.archuleta@att.net

Free Tape Op Magazine is good, almost any way you slice it. Thx Q.

Magazines are good, I need something interesting to read in the bathroom.

Free <stuff> is good. Despite that we find it hard to agree on anything, I think we all agree on that.

;)

Thanks for informing us Queue I just went subscribed myself.

Hey again yeah i'm about to subscribe to Recording Magazine and Electronic Musician just to have something to read when I don't have my hands on the internet just to be informed a little of what's all going on but it's true what you guys said alot of it's just promotional bullshit. Yeah and that Home Recording magazine wants $20 for only nine issues why didn't their cheap asses just add the other 3 well maybe there is a reason but I can't really afford to find out. Alot you guys said it was crap anyway thanks for stopping me from even contemplating throwing my money away. But yeah I will probaly be soon burnt out on them soon myself.

Later,
Illdivine

Ps. I don't mean to sound of the subject but as you might of noticed the smiley faces in my last two replies, how do you position them in your posts like at the end or in the middle?

Tonight, I just picked up EQ, Recording, and the latest Home Recording mags.

Most of these mags don't thrill me, 'cause I'm so "behind" the technology curve, that it's not funny.

I'll peruse each mag for a couple issues, before deciding to subscribe.

I can see where all 3 mags have a little something to offer.

Hey, why knock Home Recording Magazine as being slick sales crap?

Even MIX magazine is 3/4 advertisements,... like it's the COSMOPOLITAN of recording mags!

It's not the amount of paid advertising...it's the amount of *subtle* advertising...if you catch my drift.

Thanx, I'll check it out. I know what you mean.

I'm not necessarily sure I agree, but I'll check it out further.

As long as my eyes don't glaze over right away, were off to a good start. Recording mags are cool, and some articles are good, I'm sure, but they're all pushing the same shit. DAW, ProTools, Plugins, CD Workstations.

If you're into that, it's great, if not, these mags can be really b-o-r-i-n-g.
