The best of 6 options, to get me recording ASAP?

At the Musician's Friend web site, I clicked "Recording" then "4 to 12-Track Digital Workstations," which produced 13 results...6 of them being all-in-one recording packages. For somebody with zilch for experience, and getting antsy to record (computer setup or not), which of the all-in-one recording packages would really be the best bang-for-the-buck? How well would they interface with a 20" Intel Core Duo iMac, whenever I get around to being able to afford one?

I'm looking to record original surf guitar instrumentals, for my first effort, and if I can keep myself more to the original 1960s surf guitar "flavor," I should be able to get away with needing less available tracks, at least initially. Perhaps if I go for the iMac, in late June/early July, instead of a Fender Jazzmaster, I'd manage to wait until I could buy Logic Pro for it. Otherwise, I'm trying to think of the quickest way toward actually getting down to the business of recording my original creations...everything else I can piece together, as I can afford to add more goodies...hardware and software wise.

from the option in the link I'd go with the Fostex VF80EX package. I've got a Fostex VF160, and it is very easy to operate and get a good recording. The internal CD burner is a must have too.

Yep. Good call.

At this stage you need Something To Get It Done. As you don't yet have the computer, it makes little sense to contemplate what role that will paly. It need not play any role until you are skilled enough and have enough hours under your belt to do that analysis.

This will get you out of the catalog and into the recording process with little pain. Good luck and enjoy it!

I still may end up waiting another couple of weeks, even a month before I can afford to buy the Fostex VF80EX package...assuming it's still available by then. Unfortunately for me, a month would put me into my 2 weeks of "playing Army" with my Indiana Army National Guard unit, but the time/amount of money available thing may end up being a fortunate thing. If I'm already saving between now and my 2 weeks of "playing Army," I may end up being able to buy the Fender Jazzmaster AND the Fostex VF80EX package.

If it's truly limited quantities, as is shown at the item description page at Musician's Friend, I may end up posting another query like this one, in the future, for whatever their package choices are, for that time. Thanks for your suggestions, anyway...I did put the one y'all suggested into my wish list, on the offhand chance it's still available when I've got all my "ponies" together.

On limited quantities at Musicians Friend. Call and ask them how many they have. They won't give you an exact number, but if you get a cool rep on the phone you can play a hot or cold guessing game with them.
The last time I inquired about a limited quantity item, I was able to find out they had over 800(eight hundred) in stock. Hmm.....just checked, and they still have some 4 months later!

And besides, there's always ebay - you can get new gear there for an equivalent price if you learn the market and don't get auction fever.

None of those recorders light my fire very much,...

but given the narrow search you defined, I'm partial to the MR-8HD for it's 4-simul recording capability. The others are 2-simul recording limit. ;)

Oooh...watch out for those core duos that are out now. They currently have problems adapting to certain software packages and the bugs are not all worked out yet. They actually end up running some native Mac applications slower than the previous models do.

I'd get a used G4 on ebay, a nice MOTU interface, good software package, a decent mixer and mic(s) to start. (if you go the computer way)

I like using the computer much more than a standalone unit because it offers a lot more flexibility.

later...
