Ok well out of a high demand I am just letting everyone know that they are availbele to buy now, but only as a matched pair.

yeah, but now they're at $20 for a matched pair instead of the original 99c. a piece. ah well, i still might get some.

Has anyone done an A-B Karma v. MSH? My money's on the latter...
Both Karma and MSHilarious are doing great services to the kind of folks who frequent this board. Who'd have thought you could get a pair of matched condensers for less than $60 (the msh-1 series), nevermind two pairs of matched condensers for around $50 (the k-micros)-- both prices shipped!
I guess I just don't get where all the hate comes from and yes I realize that Karma has made some public mistakes on and off this board in getting the word out about themselves. The bottom line is that the consumer (in this case the recordist on a budget) wins because of the presence of both of these product lines by having the choice between these quality and affordable products.
Karma was trying to get out of the ultra-budget mic game-- I think it has to count for something that they got back in it in response to consumer demand.

I 2nd that.
They are based in NY, so they are real good for the east coasters. But still good for us on the west oast.
Actually, they're in Philadelphia, PA... But I guess a 100 miles or so doesn't really make much of a difference when you're on the other side of the country close to 3000 miles away ;)

BTW, I've ordered from 8th Street many times. They're a reputable company (they have a storefront on Arch Street in Philly). The one thing you should do however when ordering from them via the web is call to make sure they have the item in stock. Their website DOESN'T reflect if an item is currently in stock or not, and you won't find that out until after you've placed your order and you receive the confirmation email.

I did some more playing around.
I'm confused.
I don't know if my tests really show anything but this is what I did.

I played pink noise. The mic was 20 inches from the speaker. 90db at the position of the mic.

Then I recorded 4 samples with the mic.

Green - Mic pointed at speaker
Red - 90 degrees from speaker. Pointed at the ceiling
Blue - 136 degrees from speaker
Yellow 180 degrees from the speaker

It kinda of looks like an omni mic to me.
Are my tests valid?
I'm just a hack with some gear in the basement.

Hmm, I noticed that as well. I didn't do any plots or formal tests, but when I received my K-Micros, I did a few informal recordings of sounds from various positions in my basement and I noticed that there didn't seem to be as much off-axis rejection as one would expect from a cardiod.

I got my micros today. I'm impressed, they definatly don't look like much, but the do sound pretty cool. I haven't done much, but I've recorded a few tracks. I want to tinker a bit before I post anything, but I will. Good investment for the price. Thanks Karma!

so are the karma cardioid or omni? or something in between? the few comments i've heard are making them out to be omni but i think they are supposed to be cardioid.

They behave very much like an omni.
In fact I don't know how they could call these a cardioid at all.

I did this at like 2am so the volume is pretty low as not to get the cops called on me, but it's still not bad at all IMHO

It's amp and PC noise, like I said, it was super late when I did it so I couldn't put the stuff in another room, or turn up to a decent level without disturbing someone, but it was the only shot I had.

Other than that I use a Yamaha MG16/4 and I didn't even turn up the gain at all when I did it.

KMicro > Strip on MG16/4 > MAudio Delta 410

"cardiod" - very odd, indeed!

The Karma spec claims they're "cardiod" (sic). ;)

As there are no holes or slots to vent the rear of the diaphragm they must be omni, and a quick simple speech test confirms that they are indeed OMNI.

Well I ordered a matched pair. Hell for 20 bucks I'll stick them in a kick drum if I don't like them. :D
