The $5,000 vs $500 Debate

The difference between bargain and high end can show up in mastering. Mostly in the detail and body of the mic pre's, from what I can hear anyway. There is no way my room and stuff will ever sound like Talent Studio, Oslo (drool). But it can still sound good, it's just different. Listeners don't seem to think of any quality of sound as better or worse. They like the song or they don't. Heck, the Beatles can sell stuff off dictation machines.

Judging by some of the utter crap performances I see on late night tv, from "bands" that they tell us are the newest big thing since pop tops, I'd say that you really dont have to have the $50,000 dollar setup to sell $50,000 dollars worth of cd's....

Besides, have I ever listened to a big name record and thought to myself, "Gee, I'm sooooo glad they didn't use that cheap AKG mic on her voice!"

Nope!

" are we obsessing over high end gear?"

$500 or $5000
if you can't hear $4500 difference and you buy the $5000 gear anyway.. then I'd vote your obsessing or just really rich...or both?

If you start buying a bunch of high end shit and never use it for more than three days and are back to shopping looking for something to replace that piece..yeah, I'd vote your obsessing.

If your on your honeymoon and you find yourself sneaking off to look at the Musicians Friend magazine you hid in your suitcase because that Nueman just has you crazy.....your Obsessing over Hi End gear....

If you've decided to open a Roth IRA with your special other... and the bank teller noticed you accidently named the account holder as Neve Nueman...your obsessing over high end gear.. IMO.

your other comment.......
"Since I got married I had to liquidate my studio"

marriage & liquidating gear can also be a good thing actually as you've found out.
so with this I'd say this a good lesson for the other HR married people dealing with this issue!
MARRIAGE CAN BE GOOD, as long as you upgrade after the liquidation!!!!

Upgrade what exactly... i can see a lot of potential wives reading that line over thier to-be's shoulder and, maybe, getting the wrong impression...
