it's a rare occasion that i actually record these things and i though i would try to take a poke at them.

The big thing i wanted to do here is get an electric tone i liked. I got it good by itself, but i needed the drums to see if they mixed well. bass also mixes well, but i didn't like the part i made up so i didn't think it was needed.

Electric was recorded with 2 dynamics one on axis at the center of the cone, and one off axis right at the center of the cone. I have a room adjacent to this one that is a carpeted bassment with brick walls, so i put an ldc in there and pointed it at the far off wall(about 30 feet away). I also used an sdc in the room i recorded in, because it has a sort of a warped omni pattern, though its cardioid.

the amp is a delta blues 30 watt tube, guitar is a semi hollow epiphone sheraton. it has 0 reverb or compression plugins. i think i did 2 3db cuts on one of my dynamic tracks..but that's it.

you can comment on the drums but really...they are CRAP live. cracked cymbals...ringing snare, crappy bass drum. i did some expanding to tame the ringing, and EQ'd my kick and snare to get something out of them, but really, it is a horrid set. it's miced with 2 mxl 991's...57 on bass, cm50 dynamic on snare.

i took off the url...this is horrid. the timing or something sounds crappy. i listened to this a bunch of times...and now i'm listening on my laptop...its horrid. the tone isn't the thing...its just my horrid musicianship. i'm pretty ashamed of it

Now I'm really curious to hear it. Your stuff is always interesting. Perhaps reconsider.

Yeah, it's pretty tough getting a good tone sometimes. Think thats why I usually end up just playing the guitar clean. :(

ok...this is the original i had.

I'm listening to it where i mixed it right now and the timing sounds fine, but now i'm curious what you people will say. i should have layed off my hats, but i was going to layer some parts to get a feel for how it sits in a bigger mix, but i didn't want it to come off as distracting, so i didn't.

I like the gtr tone. It has some intensity and a nice distortion on the louder parts. If this mix had a thumping bass gtr it'd balance it out just right.

Drums sound pretty rough, errr....... beat/timing wise. Too much hat, not enough snare/kick. Tune that snare too.

The guitar tone sounds good here. Recording wise, the drums don't sound horrid but the beat is pretty mucked up. :p

Don't ever be ashamed of your abilities. Life's way too short man.

I don't really know what you're trying to do with the drums, but theyre everywhere man. The guitar sounds pretty good though.

I dont get it?...this is the weirdest thing I have ever heard...its almost cool how weird it is...

From cello_pudding's original post I had the impression his purpose with the thread was just feedback on the gtr tone... and that the drums are admittedly roughly recorded just to give some kind of backing for the gtr.

def. the drums are..whatever.

the drums also play in almost a changing meter. its like a hemiola (having both 2 feel and three feel) its not really 5/4...though if you count through 2 measures of 5/4 you'll come back to the beginning of the beat. so it's 5/4 with odd grouping. typically 5/4 is felt in 2+3/4 or 3+2/4, but we don't really have either consistently.

the stick count off in the beginning is a measure of 5/4. if you count the 1/8 notes...1234561234, and you'll find how the beat goes throughout.

i'm pretty much totally influenced by a band from college named berry. it's indie rock, but they messed with meter a lot! some very interesting music. i guess them and from eastern ragas.

oh...sufjan stevens too. from feel the illinoise...

"They Are Night Zombies!! They Are Neighbors!! They Have Come Back From The Dead!! Ahhhh!"

"come on! feel the illinoise!"

"prairie fires that wonder about" towards the end...

all odd timed things. he's indie/folk/rock. its really good stuff if you're looking for something different.

oh! and i probably have a little dave brubeck influence too

I agree with Tim. The guitar tone isn't to bad. But you do need the balance of the bass in there. The guitar sounds almost naked.
