In terms of a minimalist recording a rehearsal or even gig have a look/listen to this vid. Audio was recorded into a minidisc. If you trawl the other videos by Queepy/stratmonkey you'll find out the recording set up.

Now, you do need to work on recording the band properly but a decent recording of rehearsal will give the group an idea about the lack of dynamics & the failure of each to take responsibility for their part within the whole.
MOST groups end up with their own internal loudness wars as each fights to be heard in the mush. A reasonable recording will make the need obvious.
Faux mastering is the least of your problems.
When I've "finished" recording a song I'll often throw on some limiting & even a little EQ to make things a little tidier and louder so I have an idea about how it may sound if finished off professionally but I'm under no illusion that a plug in that has Master in its title is going to deliver a mastered recording.
