For anyone considering purchasing a Tentelometer, there is really only one model made by Tentel that can be used correctly on R2R decks.

The model number is (must be) T2-H 20-ML and the model number is printed at the bottom of the gauge face. Also, the measuring range is from 0 - 600grams or 21 ounces.........according to my communications with Tentel, this is the only unit to buy.

That unit listed on ebay needs to be checked out. Even though the pic is blurred, the calibration marks DON'T appear to be the same as those on my gauge. I may be wrong, so ask the seller for the model number and it's measuring range as Tentel make a number of gauges which at first glance look the same but are different in their capabilities.

If you want to be sure, email Tentel with the model number and get confirmation. This is what I did when I was searching eBay for one. Also have a look at these two links.............

It appears from the first link that the H15 has a maximum range of 425gms/15 ounces, the second link is the pricing details page and indicates that this series is for specific video machines. The other thing I noticed is that since I purchased mine, Tentel have updated their info to include the T2-H20-1 and T2-H20-2 which are also for R2R but from memory, have roller bearing probes.

Personally, I'd say retract your bid and tell the seller that he has misleading information, of course you can check with Tentel first. If he complains, you can always threaten to report his auction to eBay as being semi-fraudulent.

I guess for 7 bucks, shipping, it's worth the gamble.

Thanks so much for all the info and help you provided.

It may well turn out to be a waste of time and money but I can't resist a bargain and a chance to get a $460 meter for 7 bucks!

If it does turn out to be useless, at least I haven't spent that much on it! Hell, I waste more then that, buying a pack of smokes each day.

I'll report back once I get it.

Update.

The meter arrived today and appears to be 100% health and calibrated properly.

The glass lens that popped out when the seller dropped it did not damage the meter and the glass was re-installed securely without a mark on it.

The meter shipped was the T2-M15 UM. The manual describes it as a general purpose meter able to work with open reel recorders from quarter inch to two inch and can read up to 15 ounces of tape tension which is well within the range for working with my two decks, the 38 and MS-16 so all in all, I'd say I lucked into the deal of the month, scoring it for the cost of shipping alone.

The favored T2-M20 model reads up to 20 ounces of tension and I suspect may be more accurate for 2 inch decks that run with higher amounts of tape tension, up to 16 oz of tension so if I had such a recorder, this meter would be inadequate for measuring it but as I am dealing with 1/2" and 1" tape decks, mine should do quite nicely.

Good to hear that the T/meter seems OK.

I just rechecked my ATR-60 manual and there is one stage of testing/adjusting the Fast Winding Mechanism that requires 500gms (approx., 17.5 ozs) .........this may only be applicable to the ATR's.

The MS-16's test procedure documents call for a meter that can read between 150 to 350 grams of pressure and the model in question can read to 420 grams so I am still cool with this one for my current equipment.
