Magic Bag Of Sounds
i just got around to testing out this old mic and i can't say i'm impressed. anybody here used one or remember when they came out what they were used for? the manual is pretty crappy and they seem to suggest using it for live vocals. it definitely didn't suit my vocals, thats for sure.

I don't know the 5.0, but I got the 1.0 for free and it sounded terrible UNTIL....

I looked on the Shure website and saw what I would call some kind of easy do-it-yourself mod or something....now, it sounds GREAT!

Maybe there's something on the website for the 5.0? Just a long shot...but, like I said, the difference between the before and after on my mic was huge.

This could be your problem with the Shure BG 5.0 that you have. This bust was in 2001 so they were probably making them for some time before that:

Raid In China Turns Up More Than 50,000 Shure and Sennheiser Counterfeit Pieces
http://www.prosoundweb.com/install/commentary/kc/raid/raid.shtml

Here is a quote from an interview with CEO of Sennheiser, which is hyperlinked at the bottom of the story above.

Q: How did Sennheiser become aware of these forgeries?

Rolf: Pirated products cannot be recognized at first glance - this makes it hard for the customers to see that they have been duped. It is only when they use the microphone that they will notice the very poor sound quality. We have the obligation to provide our customers with a high quality standard. This applies not only to our products but also to the service that is provided by local service and sales partners.

The Shure BG (Beta Green) 5.0 was manufactured from 1992-1997. I have been searcing for information on it because I have one which I received with a home recording studio recently and it clearly appears to be high quality manufacturing. I don't have any of this equipment set up yet it so I haven't used it. I was hoping to get a jump on how best to use this mic. I see that it is often listed in the inventories of recording studios.

I understand so far that it is a vocal and choir mic.

If it sounds as bad as you say, it's quite possible that it is a counterfeit or it is somehow damaged.
