Hello philboyd, I was wondering where you were playing. Where about in the desert?
Anywhere near arrowhead? Hey, I owned 2 tele's, one with the maple neck(sounded like a tele, and one with a rosewood fretboard. Didn't sound like what I wanted. I like the old country sound, like skaggs, or nashville tele's. Anyway, good luck with your gig. And the tele. I sure have enjoyed the dialog. Keep it up. And I'll join ya. I mean, us old farts deserve to bla bla too!! Maybe we should start a "experienced elders thread!!" We'd probably get flamed to death Sometimes I get the feeling that the SOME, and I say that again, SOME youngsters here weren't taught manners. On the contrary. I had one guy tell me my age was showing! So the fuck what! What does that mean. Once you reach 30, your supposed to shut up or what?( No wonder they don't know shit!)Not all. just some. Rick--Anybody that flames you for your age is just an idiot. Nobody seems to be flaming Hervery Gerst and he's older than most everybody here. I say we can all learn from each other.

Wow! I watched the B&W Night. Burton was sensational. He's so fluid and so precise. Always tasty. I got to learn some of those cascading licks he does. You can tell by watching him play live that he's a monster player.

As for Teles, I have two myself. One is a 70 with a maple neck, and the other is a parts guitar--rosewood necks and a mahogany body that a very talented luthier made for me.

Philboyd--did you have some songs cut? Hey, glad to hear you are still playing!

Still on the fence on getting a tele but I think I'll call the guy tomorrow........$500 seems pretty good.

There's a few songs of mine that folks have covered that get a little airplay in the US and Yurrup and one on satellite radio on a bluegrass channel. Most of this popped up about five years ago and I'd pretty much lost all interest in songwriting by then. But it got me going again and into home recording rather than just sequencing backround music for live work. Two years ago I started a project of addressing everything I wrote, working in chronological from the first song and putting down the best possible version I could. Learned to play the mandocello along the way. Now, except for mailing off the last of the registrations, I'm done. 21 CD's worth. What to do now, I don't know.

A '49er Replies (That's 1949 to you Boys...)

There use to be this guy on the Tom Jones variety hour, this goes back aways. Tom would always have this short little peice where he would talk to this guy who was just killer on a tele. One time he played a solo with a carrot for a pick. He was a real show off but very good.

Anyone remember this guy?

Big Jim Sullivan. He was a session muso who played on most of Tom Jones' earlier recordings, and a great many other British recordings of that era.

I too remember Big Jim with his Tele, but not the carrot pick He looked a bit like a long-haired greasy biker, but he sure could play.

Western Swing? Mmm yes please I'm not familiar with the Feral Swing Kats, Clive, but I'll certainly keep a look out for them next time they're in town.

BTW Clive, I'm in Kalamunda, where are you?

Damn I love that stuff. Bobs funny. Ever heard of asleep at the Wheel? They're dynomite. Love the shit out of their stuff. I know that has nothing to do with tele's, but, oh well.

Thanks for the memory jog, Big Jim Sullivan. I gotta see if he did any of his own albums.

Regarding Jimmy Bryant's amp, there is a pamphlet on the inside cover of my Jimmy Bryant CD titled "Statosphere Boogie". On the back is a picture of Jimmy standing in front of a tall white speaker stack and the words MatterHorn High Fidelity is at the top. However I took a magnifying glass and followed Jimmy's cable across the stage and it looks like he is actually plugged into an old Gibson or possibly Ampeg with a 15 inch speaker.

Not sure if Ampeg was around in those days but it does not look like a fender.

(Yikes, that thing behind Jimmy is actually and early juke box not an amp. )

It's just my Anglo-Saxon upbringing I guess. I seem to recall an outfit named Cowboy Jazz from some years ago. They used to get played on the radio here in Perth from time to time. I liked what I heard but never bought any of their music. I really ought to make the effort to track down some of their CDs.

Listened to an old Bob Wills and Asleep at the Wheel record last night.

The pedal steel player from ASTW, Lucky Oceans now lives in Fremantle in Western Australia. He has a regular gig at a local venue in Freo (as we locals call Fremantle). He plays in a band named the Zydecats, and they aint half bad Lucky also hosts a radio programme on ABC called the Daily Planet. He gets to play a lot of very eclectic music. He's knowledgable too. philboyd--just for kicks, see if you can find a Fender Mexican 50's Tele. I played one in a store a while back through a reissue Twin and this particular guitar sounded just like my 60's Tele. Mary kaye white with a maple neck. I was kinda shocked! The newer American ones--at least the ones I've played have a flatter fingerboard radius. Some like it, but I like the old 9 1/4 Fender curve. Its just more comfortable to me. Anyway, hope you get a good one, whatever you get.

As for the completion of your project--sounds like its time to write some new songs! 21 CD's worth? Now we're talkin' a lot of home recording there!

Middleman--thanks for that info. My copy of the disc is a copy given to me by a friend. No pictures. I just really loved the tone on that record. You can hear the shimmer of the tubes on top but there is a tiny bit of grind in the lows and midrange that makes the whole thing real sweet sounding.

I'm toying with doing a remake of one of those tunes, just to see how close I can come to nailing it. Better practice!

Rick, do you recall 'The Light Crust Doughboys'? They were the Burrus Mills radio act that begat Bob Wills and numerous others. Some years ago an aquaintence who owned a radio station came across some obscure acetate transcriptions of them. These were 15 minute shows that had to pack all kinds of music plus commercials, a tight format. Anyway, there's some gems in there, among which are the first performances of Hogie's 'Buttermilk Sky' and Merle Travis' 'Divorce me PDQ'. Email me an address and I'll send you the material......think of it as private consumption of a good wine.

hAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH How can anyone not dig that name!! Sounds like Garrison Keiler! Reminds me of old Opry films, with Hank,Snow, Dickens, and all the cowboy getups! SHEEEEEEEEEEZUS I love it.
Actually, when I was a kid(about 48'-49', I traveled a lot with my dad. He was in the navy. Crossin country at night I'd sleep up in the back window of an old willys! Ha! My dad loved Hank and country fiddles! ALWAYS had a radio playin under my ear. I swear, thats where I got a love of it. Anyway, I wish I could playback what I remember, cause all those old am radio shows were tooooo good! Live too! Talk about analog. Bet I heard the 'Doughboys at one time or other. At least some simulance of it!
Out in the middle of Texas, Oaklahoma, or even in the valley! Still remember it!

Hey philboyd, how many nights a week do you play? Man, I used to play this gig at - get this- "Loyyd Hickeys 40 Grand Club" what a name huh? In west sacramento. Man, talk about a real "country club! Had all these giant posters of the country stars on the walls. Real shit. Man, he had every country star there was at the time come through there. And talk about a drinkin fighten place. Holy shit, man there was some BAD BOYS come in there on friday through sun. We played 9-2, then played host band for the afterhours from 2-9 in the mornin. Then we'd just sit around and drink and talk shit till about noon. Go home, get some shuteye, come back at 9 and do it all over again. Only sat, night, all the local bands would come out for afterhours and play, play play all the way through sunday. Took till thursday to come out of it Well, I'm ramblin again!
