there are some good hwy1's and there are some bad ones. there are some good mexi's and there are some bad ones. there are some good americans and there are some bad ones. i dare say the "great" ones are few and far between, but good ones are out there.
the answer is to play a bunch of em and to buy the one that really sings and feels right in your hands. my buddy's got a mexi tele that rings like a bell.
and why limit yourself to new? i bought an 83 strat (last year in US) last month for $500 and it's got *the sound* and plays like a dream. i wasn't planning on buying a strat, but this was the one for me.
it's not hard--you just have to listen to the guitars. as long as the guitar speaks acoustically, any shortcomings with the electronics can be resolved.
