Tears And Mascara - the first post-Jongleurs Jongleurs song...

Not to be a prick but you guys know Iggy Pop wrote that song, right? :D

Yeah, and I never liked it much either... :D Apart from a handful, I never thought all that much of Uncle Iggy's tunesmithing...

Thanks for the feedback FF. I'm now pretty happy with the drums and drumming, although I haven't reposted the latest yet - I reallly need to step away from it for a few days and recalibrate.. I actually straightened it out a lot in terms of snare... there was all sorts of stuff going on there at the start which made it real swingy, but I'm happy with what's remaining (which is what you're hearing... I've just worked on the tone a lot...)

Cheers

Yeah I'm mostly lukewarm with Iggy myself.
Re the drums, I know I'm probably over-advising here or something, but I thought the song could be served by having the drums not come in until 1:20, but it sounds like you know what you want here so I'll shut my trap. :)

Iggy's version was way better than Bowie's.
It was about the last decent Iggy sonmg too.
Too much Loco Mosquito and not enough Now I Wanna Be You Dog for the most part from about 87 on.
Panda Girl is a terrific phrase in a terrific song.

!WoW! David - You are the Messiah.

Great work here. :thumbs up: Now you can go under the name of The Jongleur.

How is that threesome going ... giving guitar lessons to those ladies from work?

Ha ha.. no worries fatman.... it's all good advice and god knows I give enough arrangement advice here, and I am always interested in other's opinions... I'll await your next opus with interest... :D

Yeah, I was never much into Iggy since about Lust for Life... Neighborhood Threat was my fave.

thanks for the compliment ray.:thumbs up:

Thanks henry. Final mix now up (I hope... I'm a bit over it...).

Interestingly enough I sent the other Jongleur an email with the song in it and he came back and said "Good stuff, why don't we get together next week for a jam..." so maybe I've spurred him into activity... :D

Ooh... just listening on the hifi now... have I over-reverbed the snare perhaps...:listeningmusic::eek:

Aaaaaaaaaarghhhh... :laughings:

Guitar lessons going well. Third one the other day. Getting the basic chords under control-ish... and next week we're going to attack Pearl Jam's Black... apparently...

Listened again, just cuz I like the tune a lot. Listen to the level of the kit, and then compare it to the L/R guitars that come in during the intro. There's a pretty big difference in levels. You want that? (I'd probably be turning the guitars down 1.5 and the kit up 1.5.) Great tune.

LOL.. never say "final mix"! Yeah, I hear ya... it sort of depends what I'm listening on... here at work on the work laptop/phones, I agree. At home on the stereo, not so much. In the car, possibly.

Having come this far without having my actual studio monitors / 'puter in my normal mix position (the lounge room), I'm not now going to move it all, but I'm acutely aware of how sticking my head in different positions where I have everything set up for tracking ( sort of media area, hallway - can't get far enough away from the monitors - gets me completely different answers, which is why it's taking me this long to sort it out.

I'm also hearing a couple of ghosts which, when I listen on the DAW, I just can't find...

1. the sibilance on "mistake" at 3.38, which VHS mentioned above, which I'm noticing clearly on this version through heaphones but not previous ones
2. what sounds like an early piano hit at 3.40, which I just can't hear on the DAW

So some more tweaking required yet!

I'm going out tonight so I won't have time to play with it. Probably not a bad thing, so I'll take up the cudgels again tomorrow night... I'm also heartily sick of the tune at this stage...

Hey, thanks Rob. Funny thing is, I don't know that I've ever even heard a CSNY song, although obviously I know who they are.. they weren't big in Australia.

Hmm... I'll check out the fill at 0.20 - I've just done another mix (although I haven't put it up yet) to discover on my home stereo that I've just overcooked the snare a little... burning lots of CD coasters on this one. Sigh. Back to the desk...

The only other version of this song was a couple of years back and a very crappy recording, but yes, featuring the other dude. Where did you find the link?

Thanks for listening...

Yeah, I think it's the layering of both the harmonies and the guitars that makes me think of CSNY. Deja Vu is a good record if you do ever check them out.

The link to your previous edition was just at the bottom of this page under 'similar threads'

How weird... never even noticed that... better that the link's dead, trust me! It was probably my first serious attempt to record the band, well before I got drums happening, recorded without a click. It was a good first attempt but a bit ratty, compared to this one. It was also before I bought a looper pedal, and it was that looper that inspired the longer version where I have the overlapping 6 figures being played on electric guitar before and underneath the final chorus lines...

The car is God.

We'll see. In the end I got home early and couldn't NOT tinker... just listening to the new final final mix on the stereo this morning at 6.30 am (sorry Margaret my neighbour...!) and I'm pretty happy with it, with perhaps just the slightest residual feeling of "is the snare now too loud?" I turned the jangly guitar bits down a touch as per your comments.

Anyway it's up now at the same link.

Thanks for all the help dobro and everyone else..

Next time I mix something I'll move the damn equipment into the lounge and save myself some angst I reckon...

Thumbs up for both the performance, song and mix. :) I like it. Catchy tune.

Whoa that's a long song. Too long for me. At 3 minutes I was ready for it to be over. IMO, 7 minutes is way, way, way too long for a song that essentially never changes or goes anywhere. I like the mix though. Seems fine. I like the boxy, kind of rattley snare sound. The guitars all seem good. Good vocals, but maybe the backups are a little loud. I think it's a good mix overall.

Cheers dude... to each their own on the length thing... I was only just getting warmed up.:D
