The left reel on my tape machine has been continuing to spin after I press stop on the transport. On top of that, I went to get a new mix of a song I'm working on and my tape machine was going at an incredibly slow rate and even not moving at times. I was thinking that this might be a motor issue but upon opening the machine I realized that the brake pads weren't fully getting pulled towards the machine. I fiddled with them a little bit and it appeared to be functioning correctly. I resembled my tape deck and after a few starts it stops it braked slowly or appeared that the brakes became stuck making the left reel move slowly. The video below documents the current issues that I'm having.

Hi there,

Three main things to check.

1 : Is the solenoid working reliably?
Observe it with the back off and flick between play/stop/ff/stop/rw/stop to see if it's working properly.

2 : The felt pads may be worn down or gummed up.
Worn down usually results in failure to brake; Gummed up usually results in over braking or binding.

3 : Does the pad assembly just need tightened?
If the pads look fine and the solenoid works properly, you may just need to adjust the brake tension.
I haven't done this recently and don't feel qualified to advise, but I'm sure there are guides and info out there.
