Teac 4070G-Akai GX-4000D-Sony TC-353D-Yamaha K-950

I just stumbled on this site. Things look interesting around here. Do you mind if I hang out a while?
I popped the hood on the Teac earlier and found three sets of two oil resevoirs. Are there any more places on this deck to oil? What about the capstan shaft? What kind of oil? Sewing machine oil? Model train oil? I'm sure I will need fresh grease as well. How to clean off the old greases? What type grease? White lithium?
Do the other three require oil as well? What type of grease for them?

I've got belt kits on order. I got tired of these things sitting on the shelf collecting dust while hundreds of hours of tape scream "play me"! I also have two boys learning guitar and Dad wants to learn some mixing. :)

Hi Brad

The Teac has 2 oil-tubes for each reel-motor, use 3 drops of light machine oil in each tube.
Capstan-axel takes 2 drops but you need to lay the deck down on the back and leave it for a couple of hours afterwards so the oil can soak inside the bushing.

Akai GX-4000 D don't need any oil on the single motor, sealed bearings.
Sony TC has a small oil-fill hole on the back and front of the motor.
Faceplate has to come off to oil the front-bearing, 3 drops on each side.

About cleaning up old grease, I use head-cleaner and Q-tips to loosen it up.
New lithium-grease is preferred to use, only in small portions, don't overdue it.

Each one of your models has different parts that can go wrong or need to be adjusted properly.
Not sure about the Yamaha, never had one of those apart before.

About the Yamaha.. can't help you there, sorry... :(

I just remembered I have some oil for my other "dinosuar". A Technics turntable. Would that oil be OK to use? It looks very light and clear.

Which one of the decks would be the best for recording? Playback? I have my favorite, but, I'd like your opinion.

Also, what type of tape are these biased for? :confused:

Brad, if the Teac has nice heads and not "tinkered with" in the past, I would pick the 4070, but because of the pinch-roller in the center of the headstack and auto-reverse function, they are sensitive for cross-talk and tape-flutter. :(
Between the 3, for good playback I would use the Akai GX-4000 D, 7-1/2 speed and hi-grade tape.
The Sony, check the playback head, as this model usually has wear, because of the transport-function with a lever pushing the tape away in fforward and rewind that after 30 years of use don't look so good anymore.
The heads is softer compare to Akai and your Teac.
Also the pre-amp is better on the Akai + Teac Brad. :cool:
