Hey experienced analogies out there.... whats the prognoses?

Problem: track one fades in and out, produces poor sound quality and weak VU at playback.

Could be head wear. As the tape travels across the heads, it gets slightly lifted at the edges where the ridge has formed. The 3340S is especially prone to this, as it only has two tape guides at either end of the headstack, whereas other machines have additional tape guides between each head.

also the tape might not be making full contact with the head, due to something being bent or the head being mis-aligned.

head wear or misalignment...ok. I'll check the alignment and if that doesn't work, I'll see about replacing the write head.

Don't replace anything unless you know for sure. Could be something simple or more complex. Do you have a competent tech in your area?

I don't know of any. My location is Portland Oregon, can you advise? Over.
